Underpaid - Negotiate Salary with Job Offer?

I am currently working in a company that I have worked for since I graduated 4 years ago. I have changed job titles since I began working there as I originally started in a graduate role and this was 'upgraded'. I now do the same role as others within my department but I am on a lower pay scale than them. My boss is aware of my interest in moving up to match their pay and has said I am ready for this but every time I ask for this I am always told that there isn't scope for this at the moment.

I really enjoy my job and the people I work with, but I recently applied for a similar role in a different company (not even expecting to get an interview), requested a salary that matched the pay grade I was hoping to move to and have been offered the job. Ideally I would like to stay in my current role at the place I am working, but I am getting more and more frustrated at the pay scale issue.

Could I use this job offer to negotiate a pay rise? If so, how would I go about this in a way that meant that if I decided not to take the job, it wouldn't cause any bad feelings between my boss and I?

Why don’t you want to move? I would use it but only if you were willing to move if it failed. Every time I’ve left a role they’ve tried to keep me by offering a pay rise

Move! Your present company (rightly or wrongly) have already said there's no opportunity to increase your pay.

Even if you win this one - do you really want to work for a company that's that unfair? You'll likely have similar battles in the future if that's the way they operate.

What's your reason for not wanting to move?

I mean why would you want to work for a company that only offers you a pay rise when you threaten to leave, rather than an employer who pays you the going rate for the job without you having to ask and threaten to leave?

I agree with MrsFin. The company you work for now are treating you unfairly and they know it.

Think about the following for both employers:
pay
opportunities to progress within the co.
pension scheme
other benefits/perks
training opportunities
location
hours
people
reputation

Don't be scared to move on. I've moved jobs and still kept in touch with friends from previous roles if that's something that's bothering you?

new opportunities can be exciting.
