Unpaid leave for inquest

Doihavetogotoworkdotcom1 · 15/10/2021 03:26

I asked my boss for a days leave to attend the inquest for my Mum. I’ve been told I can take the day off but it will be unpaid. Is it correct that i shouldn’t get paid?

We're you hoping to use annual leave or be paid on compassionate? I would give you compassionate unless there was a huge back story of requests

Dontknowwhatsnext · 15/10/2021 04:19

I don't think there's any obligation for him to let you have it paid

Compassionate leave is only paid at the discretion of the employer.

Or are you asking to use your annual leave?

It would depend on your company’s leave policy. Compassionate leave is discretionary so ask to see a copy of the company policy.

I would have given paid compassionate leave for a close family member's inquest. However, it's up to your employer. They don't have to pay you.

I hope that the inquest gives you any answers that you might need. Flowers

It’s up to your employer but mine gave me compassionate leave for my brother’s the other week. I had to make a statement and take the stand, so it was compulsory, if that helps?

Hope all goes ok and look after yourself xx

rwalker · 15/10/2021 17:39

Most would be unpaid I presume they've already given you some time off .

underneaththeash · 15/10/2021 22:14

None of my jobs would have given me paid time off for that. Although, they would let me take holiday at short notice.

PackedintheUK · 15/10/2021 22:37

You have no "right" to paid time off. I think lots of employers would pay you, but it's entirely discretionary.

ellyeth · 15/10/2021 22:51

I think it's a pretty rotten employer that wouldn't give you compassionate leave for something so serious and sensitive.

I agree, but compassionate leave is not always paid.

Although some of it might depend on how much compassionate leave has already been granted, plus of course practicalities like how much your work depends on you being there in person and how much flexibility there is in the role.

It sounds like she was given compassionate leave - it was just unpaid leave.

There's no obligation for employees to have any paid compassionate leave at all - it's at your bosses/company's discretion.

ellyeth · 22/10/2021 00:17

Well, I think a decent boss would pay compassionate leave in these circumstances.

Dontgetyerknicksinatwist · 22/10/2021 00:37

Sorry about your mum OP 💐

I think that is pretty mean spirited of your employer
