Senior management - tips welcome!

Hi!

In a couple of weeks’ time, I’m taking on a new, promoted role in a different org. I’ve had a bit of a time of it job wise lately (see: www.mumsnet.com/Talk/work/4358782-Exit-interview-for-disappointing-charity-job-honesty-or-not?msgid=111211766#111211766) and really want to make sure I’m in the right headspace.

New job involves line management, is a mat leave cover and seems quite strategy/networking focussed - all things that I have done before, but not at this level of seniority. I’m nervous and having a wobble about not being good enough. I suspect this is largely because I passed through the interview process quite quickly and don’t yet know what the job will entail day-to-day. Plus it’s remote!

So I’d love to hear any advice or pointers from people who have taken a step up into senior mgt/what helped you when you were new in post and what do you wish you’d known/done any any tips for me?

Thanks in advance

X

Read a book called the 1st 90 days which covers some of this

Also, make sure you meet (virtually) the people you need to, ask questions & get up to speed at the start

Re team: from experience- you can start former & go softer, but you can’t easily do it the other way around!

Mat cover is tricky as you're essentially just a placeholder.

Will you get a handover with the post holder?

JackieWeaversExitButton · 12/10/2021 18:29

Thanks all.

@hopeishere I’ve had an hour-long chat with her but she left due to pregnancy complications. Now awaiting handover notes and will be meeting my direct report before I start, too.

Have downloaded first 90 days. Thanks you helpful bunch!

1st 90 days is good. Also consider "What got you here won't get you there"

Also, when you land, don't just learn the role, learn everything. Like, everything. Navigating the organisation will be a huge strength.

Think about how you can establish some wow factor. This is usually doing something that goes beyond the role and makes people sit up and notice your work and who your are.
