Tell me about your work commute?

After wfh for 18 months I'm considering a new job which will require me to be in the office 5 days a week. It's an hours commute each way on public transport. I have done much longer commutes before but after all this time of 'commuting' between my bedroom and my living room, the prospect of travelling to work again seems daunting. Its a good job but I need some perspective here! This is fine isnt it? If you travel to work by public transport, whats your daily commute like?

Door to desk just under an hour for me.
15 min walk to train
10 min waiting tops for train
20 min train journey
10 from train station to office

I dreaded first going back after wfh but after the first day was done it was fine.
Always seems worse than it is

If i drive it is an hour. On the train it is a 25 min walk. 45 mins in the train. 20 min walk. The walking is at a fast pace. It’s not fun.

I have been WFH since March 2020 and have been back in the office 3 times in the last few weeks as we're back to a 'blended' wfh/office from November.

My commute is 10-15 mins walk to local train, 45 mins on train then 10 mins walk to office.

I don't mind the train journey if it's not too busy as I can quite easily zone out and it's my time to get work out of my head for the day. It took a lot of effort to get out of the house during 2020 and found I didn't switch off from work very well simply walking from desk to living room.

That said, most recent trip in to the office there were torrential downpours on my walk to the office and I had to sit in sodden trousers and shoes for the day😩 Wouldn't have had that WFH!

50 min drive each way. I'm horribly jealous of the WFH-ers.

Tulips15 · 09/10/2021 23:01

25min each way (Drive)
If I got the bus would be 35min each way.

( we live rural)

I used to do a commute by train - five minutes walk to the station, 50 minutes on the train, 15 minutes walk. Thankfully I only did it 3 days a week and wfh the other 2 - it was a PITA, esp on the days the train was delayed o

Or cancelled

My current commute is about 1.75 hrs door to door with a fair wind. I currently have to go in 1 day a week and eventually 2. Very new job.

My commute has varied between 45 mins and 1.5 hrs on trains over the last 10 yrs but I’ve not had to go in 5 days a week in that time - at the most was 3 days a week.

Personally I wouldn’t take a job that was 5 days in the office now if it meant a beast of a commute - 2 days a week is fine with all the risk of disruption of trains etc etc etc but every day no thanks.

We based our house buy on the commute, it’s a 5 min walk to station 17 mins in train then another 5 mins underground and 2 mins walk to office. It was daunting getting back into the routine after wfh but I think it’s good to get out and be around colleagues again

I work in the City and walk to work. Takes me 20 mins. It should be wonderful (no dependency on tubes etc plus getting a bit of exercise) but after so long working from home, my feet are HATING wearing shoes. The shoes and tights combo is just miserable.

housemdwaswrong · 10/10/2021 00:05

45 minute drive, would be 2 1/2 his by public transport and would be 20 minutes late.

I like the drive as it gives me downtime, but I'm not sure I'd like public transport for that long...I'm not used to it though as I live relatively rurally (obviously). People on here seem to commute with ease though. I'd love to be able to read on the way into work. :)

StCharlotte · 10/10/2021 00:26

I used to do 90 minutes by walk/train/bus or tube into central London.

Now I work locally and have a 20 minute walk.

But I would happily do the 90 minutes again if the right job came up.

You'll be fine Smile

MissCruellaDeVil · 10/10/2021 01:43

About half an hour down country roads for my new job, previous was almost an hour using the motorway. I much prefer the shorter commute and am home earlier for DC.

doggydaft · 10/10/2021 01:48

10 minute walk then about 40 minutes in the bus which takes me to the door.
15-20 minute drive.
To be honest I actually don't mind the public transport as it gets me in the mindset for work and in reverse helps me leave the day behind.
I always have my headphones with me and listen to music or faff around on mumsnet/instagram etc

Trainers to work and heels under your desk?
