Negotiating with current employer with job offer

I had 2x interviews at the same time - was offered 1 and reserve list for the other. Have been happily working in the offered job for 7 months and today have received an email asking if I would still be interested in reserve job.

My dilemma is my current job is great but I'm not 100% happy with salary, if they offered more money I think I would definitely stay. The other job is similar salary but has a better package overall - less hours, more holidays, Flexi time, public sector so good pension.

I'm wondering how to handle this if I get an offer - do I hand in my notice and see if they offer me more money to stay? Or approach my boss and tell them the situation and ask if there is any scope for a raise? Ask for a raise and not mention the other job? I don't want to cause any bad feeling but obviously I would like to earn more money/have better package overall.

Is your current job private sector? How skilled/difficult to fill is the job?

After 7 months I am not sure you have a lot of negotiation power but if you are willing to go to new job then option B sounds fine. Ask for more and take new job if you dint get it

After only 7 months I doubt they will be happy and it is a bit early to ask for a pay rise.
I think you have to decide what you really want

Bit more on this - before interviewing for these roles I was SAHM for 6 years so I accepted a lower offer than I was looking for to get my foot in the door. It is probably average for the type of role but I am really good at my job and the role has progressed since I started (brand new role so still being developed).

Am I really going to upset things by asking for a raise as this is not how I usually like to do things but I do want to ensure I am earning at the maximum amount possible. I feel I am worth more than what I currently earn.

The pension contributions are fairly significant in the other job so although really happy where I am and the role itself is a great fit for me I feel I would be losing out by staying under current circumstances.

I think you should decide which role (and related package) you would prefer and go with that. If somebody came to me after seven months waving a better job offer, I would wish them all the best in their new role.

Ok thanks all for replying - glad to hear your opinions on this. Will make a decision and go with that! I would definitely not want to cause any bad feeling, my current manager is lovely and employer has been very flexible with me and my childcare arrangements which are tricky to say the least!

Also bear in mind how stable has your job history been to date: less than a year & people may think you had to jump ship as could not do the role /failed an extended probation etc …

Speak to your manager- be honest and say you've been contacted by them and you weren't job hunting but you've been offered X, you want to stay/you enjoy your role but also need to consider the offer due to X benefits. See what they say?

Did you tell them the money wasn't what you were looking for when you accepted the job? Or is any negotiation going to come completely out of the blue? I disagree with others that negotiating your salary makes you look bad, but I do think that ultimatums etc shouldn't be the first thing you do ie if they have no idea you're even vaguely unhappy, for you to suddenly announce you want more or you're leaving would be a bit odd.

I'd also question why you're getting the call now, 7 months later?

Narcos · 08/10/2021 22:07

I told them initially what salary I was looking for on application and also confirmed that figure in interview and when HR made the lower offer and I hummed a bit over it they advised it was in order to 'keep in line with the team'. HR then also said once you are in then opportunity to earn more etc. So I accepted especially as I was working in a temp role after just returning from a period of not working. Also I knew that I would do a good job and if potential was there then I would do what I could to achieve a better salary.
Re: 7 months later - I was put on reserve list for a civil service job, the list lasts 12 months. So further opportunities have came up and they are now recruiting from the list rather than advertising again.
