If you ask for reasonable adjustment at interview, does the employer have to tel you if these cannot be met?

Applied for a position about a month ago and had an invite to an assessment. On the invite it asked if any reasonable adjustments were required and I said yes, I am visually impaired so e.g. a typing test would either need to be provided in an alternative format or in audio format, plus a written paper would either need to be available electronically or read and filled in by someone. I use a screenreader and if need be I could provide my own laptop, but that would of course depend on their general protocols around these things.

I happened to call the day before the assessment to check that this would be happening, and they said it hadn’t come through, even though it was filled in on the acceptance form so could I email them the requirements.

I did this, and they said that their recruitment manager would look into it, but cancelled my assessment in the meantime.

That was weeks ago, and since then I’ve heard nothing.I could chase them, but what I was wondering is, do they have to confirm that they are unable to meet reasonable adjustment request, or can they at this stage just disappear with no further contact?

I have pretty much written this one off now, but presumably if reasonable adjustments can’t be met they should say that rather than just disappear?

This is awful I’m so sorry and completely agree if they can’t make the adjustments they need to let you know. Your adjustments sounds eminently reasonable to me so this potential could be discriminatory :(

I am sorry to read this. It does sound potentially very discriminatory and absolutely unacceptable.

I do think you should follow up with the company directly, but perhaps giving them only a certain number of days to respond. They are probably relying on you not following through. I have some sympathy if a tiny one-man band but none if they employ reasonable numbers of staff. (And a recruitment manager implies a certain size of company).

Are there any charities or support networks you use that can provide more detailed advice?

At the very least I would be wanting an explanation as to why the reasonable adjustments request included in your application had mysteriously become detached.
