Your fantastically uplifting career change stories

To cut a decades-long story short: I started my career with a long spell in a very technical field which I loved. I always pushed for promotion because, you know, ambition, and I slowly got promoted away from the technical aspects and into ever-more abstracted leadership activities.

Now, after 25 years or so of work, I'm in a role which is very well paid but is almost entirely devoid of fun. I love my colleagues and team, but the pressure to have loads of other people deliver is just continuous, it's all about the influencing and networking, and I've realised that the bits of my job that I love are massively outweighed by the bits that I dislike. I cannot imagine doing this until I retire.

I'm thinking of taking some time off to retrain back into a (different but closely related) technical skillset and take a huge step down in responsibility and pay - on the order of a 55% cut. My budget shows we could afford this, but it would obviously be a big change!

Can you please tell me about any stories you have where you've done the same and it's worked for you? I'm feeling a bit 😱 about it, need reassurance!

Worked in the civil service then had 2nd dc , took redundancy when on maternity leave, paid debts off. Went to Uni, now work on a school which I love (most of the time!)

I've changed career twice, retraining both times, and I am so glad I did. I've never been a high earner so the drop in salary was never that much. The difficult thing is starting at the bottom again each time until I've built up some experience, but my previous roles/industries have given me loads of transferable skills. In short: go for it.

Plenty of retraining experiences on this (brand new) board: ‘Mature Study and Retraining’.

Hello OP, I have been where you are. Successful career, very comfortable salary, great job and workplace in fact but just no longer for me. I left at the beginning of the year, and am still exploring my next career.

You may be interested in www.careershifters.org/ (it was recommended to me on MN and I really like their "Success Stories" section).

Be careful though, I find this world of career shifting plagued by life coaches, job coaches and snake oil salespeople.

I agree with last comment re snake oil sales people!

OP: can you afford to pay off your mortgage by continuing in current role for a short time?

Do you want really want to take such an extreme pay cut with impact on your retirement etc? I’d keep looking for roles that fit your interests but with less of an extreme salary drop …

HouseyHouse21 · 11/10/2021 12:00

OP, I was going to post exactly the same thing. I've reached the end of my tether in my current role and am trying to square the extreme drop in salary vs quality of life I'd get by doing something I actually enjoy.

Are you able to do some low-risk experimenting by doing a few weeks' work experience in the new area, to get a sense of whether you'd actually enjoy it long-term?
