Civil service role - 12m FTC

Hi

I've got an interview this Friday for a civil service role for a 12 m FTC position.

What are the opportunities for gaining further roles during that 12m and so remaining in civil service? Is this practical or impossible?

It's in the internal audit dept if that helps. Just no experience of this sort of thing before.

Definitely a chance you can apply for a secure a permanent role in that time. Lots of CS jobs are only advertised to civil servants, so you’ll be able to access a much wider range of jobs on the CS website too.

Thanks. That's what I thought.

What @Wigeon said. I work in a departmental ALB and we constantly have expression of interest positions, secondments, assignments, as well as the internal only cross-departmental jobs. I think once you're in, it becomes much easier to stay in.

Agree but you may need to pass 6 month probation before applying for internal vacancies

Agree with all comments above. It’s a good way to get a foot in the door, raise your profile and possibly secure a longer term role.

Make sure you negotiate on your salary when you join if you are successful. Once you are in, the only way to increase your pay is through promotions. So it’s really important that you are paid what you are worth from day 1 as it won’t go up!
