Compressed Hours

Hi,

Due to have a chat with my manager in November about my return to work and what hours I'll want to do etc. But my brain is in a middle and I'd realllllly appreciate some help.

Realistically I'll need to go back FT, I've calculated whether I'd be able to drop down to 4 days a week (30 hours) but it just doesn't make financial sense.

Just an outline: Public sector role, 37 hours a week. I am able to make use of flexi-time with core hours being 10am-3.30pm. At the moment, I am about 1hr distance from work so would need to factor in the commute. Looking at relocating to be closer but that's another story.

There is the ability to WFH but I will need to be in the office 2 days a week.

I have thought of the following.

Mon - 9-5 (office)
Tues - 9-5 (office)
Weds - 8-4 (home)
Thurs - 8-4 (home)
Fri - 8-4 (home)

Finishing at 4 would allow me to just mill around, sort out bits and bobs, perhaps go to the gym before needing to pick up DD from nursery by 6.

When I'm in the office, I would need to start later just because of nursery drop off, and traffic due to where nursery is.

However I'm now wondering whether there would be any way of rejigging my hours so that I am able to compress them to have one day off a week.

This would still mean 2 days office, 2 days WFH and one off so able to spend more time with DD.

Basically if my calculations are correct I'd need to tack 7 hours on between Monday-Thursday. Is this even possible?? Or am I just making my life too complicated.

Help me come up with a proposal to bring to my manager!

What are your times at nursery? Maybe a 9 day fortnight would work better, you'd only have to do 30 minutes a day more. Its very common in the public sector.

I work a compressed 37 hour week. I work 9 hours 15 and usually do a 7-5pm. Doesn't bother me. I have no children (currently pregnant). I will, however be moving to 3 days at 9 hours 15 mins after maternity.

Nursery is open 7.30-6. DD is currently down for 4 days and due to be with family on the one day she's not there. However I would rather have one day off a week to spend with her instead.

I've never heard of the 9 days over a fortnight. Haven't seen it in any of the policies either - would you be able to explain a bit more for me?

Yes I think I would also prefer to start earlier and finish at a reasonable time.

I'm just wondering whether it would actually work in reality though - especially on the days that I would have to commute in.

Annoying niggle tells me that it's not really plausible and that I should just stick to a more routine pattern.

Wondering whether I would be able broach doing a half day - so working 8-12 or something. Who even knows if that's a thing. Gah

@tee20x a none day fortnight means you'd have a day off every other week, usually a Friday. So you would still do 75 hours over 2 weeks, but you'd work 8.3 hours for 9 days and none on the tenth.
So maybe 8.30 - 5.15 including a 30 minute lunch break.

I'm doing 4days, 8-5.30, 30min lunch. We couldn't afford me part time but this way we're technically saving money as I lose £60 a month and the nursery day a month is £200, and I get Tuesdays with baby.
