Nursing for the squeamish

If you are caring and a good listener and want to change careers from office finance work, but are a bit squeamish (the one who felt faint at school anti smoking videos and the ante natal videos), then are there any options?

Of course! Although how you could get squeamish at an anti smoking video is pretty special imho!!
Maybe instead of nursing an allied health profession might suit you better. I think every profession has lower banded support workers/assistants if you aren’t planning on doing a degree.
Maybe social care would suit you too. There are loads of jobs where you can make a difference and not be exposed to (too much) icky stuff

Thanks!

It was a video showing the inside of two sets of lungs, which wasn't overly pleasant.

I don't want to be like that. I've fainted at the dentist, at blood tests etc 🙄

I'm generally pretty tough sort of person and can put up with plenty and I don't really know why I'm like this. Interestingly I'm ok with animal guts and gore.

Maybe a vet nurse/animal care assistant then!

Justcashnosweets · 27/09/2021 15:28

I was going to suggest mental health nursing but we see our fare share of gore and body fluids 😬

Thekormachameleon · 27/09/2021 15:31

Definitely not vet nursing if you are squeamish- I've seen things I'll never forget 🤢🤢🤢

Quidity · 27/09/2021 15:32

Occupational Therapy?

TheRedHen2 · 27/09/2021 15:32

Not sure I want to work with animals.

I'm thinking of having hypnotherapy to sort myself out!

Social work instead ?

aConcernedPrude · 27/09/2021 16:13

Watching with huge interest as I've given up on a career in nursing for this very reason Sad

RatherBeRiding · 27/09/2021 16:17

Social work - caring and being a good listener are vital but you don't get hands on!

DuneFan · 27/09/2021 16:25

Paediatric play specialist? Occupational therapist? Physiotherapist? Orthoptist or optician? Limited bodily fluids in most of those.

GoWalkabout · 27/09/2021 16:28

I think its evolutionary. Some people's fight or flight response is to have the blood rush from the peripheries and fall down (faint) which if you are in battle to be fair does help your survival.

Ozanj · 27/09/2021 16:30

Social work can get grimey too - one of my friends developed OCD after working with someone who would pick up her shit and then refuse to wash her hands for weeks. Sad

You could go into my field - childcare / nursery practitioner. It isn’t highly paid but on the whole it isn’t worse than looking after your own kids. You do need to change jobs as you progress through your education unless you luck out.

Deffo don't think MH gets you out of the grim stuff Grin
