Working for a charity- thought they’d be nice!

Started a job recently for a charity where most people are on basic min wage. I didn’t get a contract for a few weeks and realise they don’t pay occ sick pay just stat sick pay from day 4. I think this is so crap for people already being paid peanuts. I bought this up with a couple of managers today - I.e any plans to introduce this ? This was very definitely not what they wanted to hear and suddenly they’re basically wanting me out (after 6 weeks) due to ‘performance issues’- I.e enquiring about basic workers rights. Anyone got any experience of working for a charity? Is it always this backwards and horrible?

I don’t think k it’s fair to expect that working for a charity will have the same benefits as working in the public sector.
Councils, gov, civil service and NHS etc are pretty unaccountable while charities must justify every Penny.

@Peterbear I think your problem is not that charities are mean, it's that you've got used to public sector. Any private sector Ts & Cs will horrify you. Charities are no different from any other private sector employer.

I spent my whole career in the public sector, and when it came to sickness and other benefits, the difference in the way I was treated and the way all my friends in the public sector were, was pretty shocking. They all earned more than me at a similar level, but I was happy with my lot.

I'm a trustee of a charity, and we try to be flexible, but we simply don't have the funds to offer six months sick leave.

Ugh.

I spent my whole career in the public sector, and when it came to sickness and other benefits, the difference in the way I was treated and the way all my friends in the PRIVATE sector were...

Sarah Clara yes exactly that. It's a very different culture. Thanks for your response

I can imagine it's a shock if you've always been public sector, and leave. I've gone the opposite way and wow, benefits are incredible for everyone, not just those at the top.

Working in HR, I have to say it can create an unrealistic view of what is the 'norm', and a lack of understanding that their benefits are already exceptional.

Best of luck finding a new role. Next time get everything in writing before accepting though.

So you thought your employer would be kind and you want us to be kind?
Nobody owes you kindness and your employer should be professional and operate within the law but that’s it.
You don’t sound like you have a lot of real world experience
