In March 2020, my employer changed their payment terms so that you were payed at the end of the month for the previous month. This didn't affect me but has meant that any new starts only got their pay at the end of the subsequent month of working, so sometimes working for 7 weeks without getting paid.

It's been reviewed and they are now reverting back to getting paid at the end of the month for the current month of working. For those who were employed by the company since March 2020, this means they will be getting an extra month pay this month to make up for the one they missed at the beginning of their employment . Hope that makes sense 🙈

Anyway, even though I have remained in employment with the company, I have had 2 fairly significant pay rises in that time. All paid in the next months pay.

Example, I started my new role in March 2020, and got paid the extra at the end of April 2020. I had another change of role in July 2021 with another pay increase, which I received at the end of August 2021.

So this month, I should be receiving my pay for August, but because they've reverted back to current months payments, it means I'm getting paid for September, not august.

Does that mean I have missed a month of my increased salary? Similarly, is it affected by the increase in March 2020 too?? Can't get my head around it and will bring it up with them unless I'm just being daft (which I probably am!!)

If you got paid for July at the end of August and are being paid for September at the end of September, when are you receiving pay for August?

TheWoleb · 15/09/2021 14:11

They need to settle up first by paying everyone for August like, now. Then they can pay everyone for September on the 30th of September.

So when this first came in, we got paid for the same month twice. So in Feb we got paid at the end of Feb, and I March we got paid for the end of Feb. So that gave us our 'month's lying time'

However, I earn twice as much now as I did then. So if they are just taking the double month paid last year then there's a huge discrepancy.

No one else has questioned it though which makes me feel I've got it all wrong 🙈

I thought you said the change was happening now?

sleepfortheweek · 15/09/2021 16:02

@flowery yes I mean when the lying month first came in (last year) but it's reverting back as of this month and its pay day next week so want to know if I should query it 🙈

OK OP you must have misinterpreted something because there's no way they paid for the 'same' month twice - if nothing else I can't imagine how they'd square that with taxes and payroll.

I think you should query it with HR, just ask them to explain when you will be paid for August, i.e.will there be a double payment with the September pay check, since you understand they're changing the system.

Otherwise I'm fascinated what your pay slips must look like - if you were to leave the company tomorrow, they'd have to pay you for August, so it sounds like there's some kind of confusion somewhere.

sleepfortheweek · 15/09/2021 16:26

I'm pretty sure that's what they said to begin with when they transitioned to paying a month in lieu.

If you were on the payroll before then, there will be no additional payments, but if you joined the company AFTER that time, they will pay the month in lieu this month too.

I didn't go a month without pay when they changed over

OP posts:
sleepfortheweek · 15/09/2021 16:32

I've received pay every month, so they wouldn't have to pay me if I left. It's just the discrepancy between last months pay and the month I was paid for 'twice'

Bump for more replies x

You’ve been paid for July.
You’ll be paid for September shortly.
Therefore ask them about pay for August. If they say you received it in February or whenever it was, just say in that case I’ve not received the correct about as my salary for August was £X.

sleepfortheweek · 21/09/2021 20:08

So as it stands, they are saying there is no discrepancy. They are basically putting their fingers in their ears and saying la la la.

Not sure what to do

OP posts:

When are they saying you received pay for August?

sleepfortheweek · 21/09/2021 20:23

My manager is speaking on my behalf to HR. They told him that they've 'bumped it along'

He's trying very hard to get them to see where I'm coming from but they've basically just shrugged their shoulders.

I'm getting the same this month as I would have had the changes not happens, that seems to be their argument Confused

Annoyingly, no other member of staff has brought it up.

Speak to them yourself. Just ask them to point you to the date you were paid for work done in August, and don’t deviate from the question.
