I've NC for this as very recognisable dilemma in RL!
I am returning to work after a long (8 years) time away. I am lucky enough to have been offered a job in consultancy, at an assistant level (Job A); they have agreed that I can do part time.
I would be very excited about this, but have also applied for a job where I used to work, pre-children (Job B). The 'old' job is for a government organisation; they'd be prepared to consider part time; having spoken to an ex-colleague and my old team leader, they were very keen for me to apply. I think I may have a good chance if I got an interview.
My quandary (all hypothetical until I get offered Job B) is: if I could choose, which should I go for? They offer the same things in terms of part term work; salaries not wildly different. The difference would be: Job A - consultancy, for profit, potentially more pressured work environment. But - more varied, challenging and therefore more interesting in the long run. Potential to 'move up' from assistant role to consultant role in a year. But - do I want such a challenge when I'm getting used to working again after a long time out? What if consultancy doesn't suit me?
Job B - not for profit; known entity - I know it's family friendly, I know the team leader is understanding about family commitments. The work is interesting ( I did it before) but once I'm back in the swing of it, might it be a bit.... boring? But is it better to go with this one to get back into working?
As you can tell, I'm angst-ing over something that may not happen, but I if it does, I'd really like to have a feel for what I might do. At the moment I'm in talks with the consultancy over working days etc so am poised to accept. Job B application window has just closed, so I should hear soon, and Job A would not start until after any potential interview for Job B.
It would be great to hear about any experience you have. I know it's all individual but I really am nervous about going back and not sure if I should go for the safer option while I find my feet.
thanks for reading, apologies for length of post.
