Part time annual leave

DixonD · 13/09/2021 12:01

Hi there,

Is someone able to help me calculate what annual leave I’m entitled to?

I work Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday- 9-2pm.

Full time equivalent is 30 days.

My place of work works out holiday in days worked per week, rather than hours, if that makes a difference.

Thank you in advance.

So if you are full time you work 5 days a week so get 6 weeks holiday.

You will also get 6 weeks holiday but your weeks are only 3 days so you get 18 days holiday as you only need to take 3 days off to get a week.

overthethamesfromyou · 13/09/2021 12:04

I would assume that if you are getting the equivalent of 30 days, which is six weeks, that you will get six weeks worth of your hours, so 18 days of 5 hours each

Quartz2208 · 13/09/2021 12:05

I have 18 days on 30 for 3 days a week - the equilvalent of 6 weeks that 30 days is.

Because I dont work back holidays I also get 60% of the 8 bank holidays - they give me 5 days. If a bank holiday falls on when I work it automatically takes it

DixonD · 13/09/2021 12:05

That’s what I thought but they’re telling me it’s 17.

Thanks for your quick responses.

Is the 30 including or excluding bank holidays? Some places give you only the days you need (so not many for you if you don’t work Monday or Friday).

DixonD · 13/09/2021 12:06

I thought the same about the bank holidays (I’ve had these back in previous years as I don’t work Mondays), but this seems to be forgotten about this year!

OP posts:

The annual leave doesn’t include bank holidays, these are extra on top.

Then I don’t understand why it’s only 17?!

dementedpixie · 13/09/2021 12:36

@DixonD

So is it 30 plus 8 for full time or does the 30 include the bank holidays as this makes a big difference?
dementedpixie · 13/09/2021 12:39

If its 38 then that's the equivalent of 7.6 weeks holiday for full time staff. For you it's 3 x 7.6 = 22.8 days

If its 30 then that's 6 weeks holiday for full time which gives 3 x 6 = 18 days

dementedpixie · 13/09/2021 12:42

Do you think they've deducted the 28th December from your entitlement as its a Tuesday and that leaves you with 17 from the original 18 you are entitled to?

Littlegoth · 13/09/2021 12:43

Did you start part way through the year? Even a week?

Littlegoth · 13/09/2021 12:45

@dementedpixie ah yes! Where I’ve worked in the past part time employees have their bank holidays pro rated according to actual days worked, and then had to book it off as annual leave. So possibly this

namechange30455 · 13/09/2021 12:47

Have they taken the 28th December out and then are going to give you a BH allowance on top?

Or is it to do with there being an extra BH next year?

It "should" be 18 as far as I can see, so they must have done an extra calculation of some kind to get 17. I bet it's about BHs...can you ask them?

ToddlerLockdown · 13/09/2021 12:49

Does 9-2pm include any unpaid breaks? This might factor into the number of days/ hours of leave?

dementedpixie · 13/09/2021 12:51

It really depends on whether the 30 includes bank holidays or whether its 30 + 8 for Full timers.

18 days - 1 Bank Holiday for the 28th leaving 17 days of choice is the most likely scenario

DixonD · 13/09/2021 13:00

No, been there 18 years this year. I’ve been part time for 5 years and we have a new HR person who’s telling me I owe them holiday.

She’s not calculated the bank holiday allowance.

We get bank holidays on top. I’ve always had bank holiday allowance. Until today!

I have emailed them to query so we’ll see what they come back with.

Thanks everyone!

So is it 38 days in total for full time?
Part time staff get pro rata bank holidays so you'd get ⅗ of 30 days (18) plus ⅗ of 8 bank holidays (4.8) giving a total of 22.8

Coogee · 13/09/2021 13:53

How many hours in a full working week?

Musicaltheatremum · 13/09/2021 14:31

If you use the gov.uk website to calculate you get 16.8 days which would be 17 but this is because that uses 28 days as the standard number of AL days not 30.
The denominator is incorrect.

Wtfdoipick · 13/09/2021 18:15

How much bank holiday allowance do you get? And how do you normally take them?

dementedpixie · 13/09/2021 18:19

She should get ⅗ of annual leave plus ⅗ of bank holidays

OP hasn't clarified what full time staff get so it's hard to advise properly
