Conversation with manager about leaving

I know this might be a bit of a ridiculous question but I really don't know how to start a conversation with my LM to tell him I'm quitting.

In previous roles, I've always had pretty close working relationships with managers and the process has been more organic (e.g. they knew I was considering further study etc.) but here, it's a much more formal organisation, and I've always worked remotely so relationship with manager isn't a close/ natural. I've only been here a year. I can't think how to bring it up without feeling like I'm dropping a massive bombshell. Any advice gratefully received, as I'm feeling really anxious about it.

I think if you don't have a close/natural relationship then there won't be an organic opportunity, you're just going to have to bite the bullet and make a specific call/arrange a meeting and just say that you've been offered another opporunity (or whatever the reason you're leaving is) and you wanted to let him/her know before you put it in writing. Given you've been there such a short period of time you should expect questions about whether there are any issues that are causing you to want to leave and plan some responses accordingly.

Thanks TrickOrRuddyTreat, I guess you're right. It just seems so out of the blue. We have a call every week and I always say everything is fine (which it is, in terms of there not being anything wrong with the job - it just isn't for me), so it just feels so awkward to suddenly change that to "by the way, I'm leaving"

Probably no other way to go about it though

I mean, it's always awkward, because most people don't tell their managers they're thinking of leaving so they don't get pushed out.

It happens literally every day though. You just book a meeting or call and tell them you wanted to let them know you've decided to resign for another job, you expect your last day to be X in accordance with your notice period. That's it.

Yeah, I suppose I'm overthinking it a bit. I'll just have to get it over with!

An easier way to do this is to email them your resignation letter (as an attachment) saying 'Please can we discuss this in our 10 am catch-up'.
