Which job should I take? Help!

Help! After chasing promotion for years I have ended up with 3 job offers in one week! I have narrowed it down to 2. Sorry this is long winded, I've tried to include all relevant infix

I work for a large civil service department which has onsite locations all over the country, it also has regional/national staff who WFH.

Both jobs are a promotion of a grade above, same pay. I have been in my old grade for 9 years and am thoroughly ready to move on.

I have two school age kids (with supportive partner) and currently have a WLB which means I work almost full hours over 4. DP would support me whichever job I took.

Job 1.
Temporary secondment for 6 months, I would return to my old job after. Secondments sometimes get extended (but no pay rise) or turn into permanent positions but there is no guarantee. Would be gutted to have to return to my old job (there is no guarantee I would keep my WLB if I had to go back to it). It would still be good experience to enable me to apply for similar WFH jobs but obviously

t is full time, 5 days a week. It is mainly WFH with some travel around the country, with expenses paid for travel. No overnight. I love the job description and would take it in a heartbeat if it was permanent. I have never worked from home before, even throughout the pandemic, so wonder if I would adjust but I would give it a good go.

The pros with working from home are obviously saving money on the commute/wear and tear on the vehicle. Flexible hours. Save time from the commute etc.

Job 2
This job is permanent which means my pay would increase every year to the top pay scale.if you are only temp promoted, you stay on the bottom pay scale and it's not unheard of for staff to end up temp promoted for years.

The job is full time, 37 hours over 5 but I could ask them for a variation but no guarantee. It's 28 miles away, mainly motorway, no expenses for commute, obvious expense of petrol and wear and tear. Commute usually between 35-45 mins depending upon traffic. Flexi time so the hours are still fairly flexible but not as flexible as WFH.

I do like job description very much, it's much more people based than the other one, working directly with service users. I do like the other job spec more but only just. This one would be different as it is based onsite.

I have to make a decision soon and swing between the two! Help. 😩

I would say go for job 1 as it will give you a chance to find out if you like working from home plus you say you slightly prefer it over the other job.

Thanks for your input. My overarching fear with no 1 is that it will end and I'll have to go back to my old job which is a similar commute to job 2 and lower pay! I feel so ready to move on!

Take job 1.
New jobs are coming up all the time in the Civil Service, keep your eye out for another role at the same grade while you're in job 1. Unless your skills are very niched you're likely to find something else to move to if job 1 doesn't get extended or made permanent.
