Boring tax code question

theyresexpeoplelynn · 27/08/2021 09:56

I recently got a pay rise and my payslip just arrived. Tax code is 1215L M1, is this an emergency tax code? Will it sort itself out in time or do I need to do anything? Clueless about these things Blush

A pay rise should not trigger a change in tax code, has it definitely changed or is it maybe that you haven’t looked before?

You could ask your payroll department if they received a notification of a change of code but it also might need you to call HMRC to get it corrected.

Thank you, it's definitely changed. When I checked online it says I HMRC £15 which is maybe why the tax code changed. I'm not sure, I will have to ask accounts/payroll I guess. Thanks for the responses Smile

The personal allowance is: £12,570 so most people's will be 1257L.

But if you owe HMRC anything or they owe you then that will change or if you have any allowances or a second job.

What was your previous tax code? Have you started getting additional benefits from your employer?

That isn't the standard emergency code - that is 1257L M1 for someone paid monthly. However, the M1 bit does mean this is an emergency code. Emergency codes are used when there is a change in circumstances which means you haven't paid the right amount of tax. A pay rise on its own shouldn't trigger a move to an emergency code.
