How to work around 8 week notice period for work

Hello

Pls need your advice

Namechanged as I don't want to be outing now or later

I currently work for a very big charity in UK. I was once on permanent but got changed back to fixed term beginning of this yr due to the covid situation after which I'm due for redundancy end of Nov this yr.

I really would love to stay in my current org but time is running out and I have about 3 months left.

I don't want to leave it too late before applying..my contract says I have an 8 week notice period but I'm seeing jobs that are paying considerably more now that I want to go for

Please what can I do if I want to go ahead and apply notice regarding my notice period?

Is there a way around this ?

Thanks a lot

Just go for the jobs. An 8 week notice period is not unusual - 3 months is quite common.
I’m not sure what you want to work around to be honest

Thanks

Maybe I’m not being clear

I thought I had to give an 8 week notice period before leaving right?

So if I go for an interview and get a job in 2 weeks for example?

Wouldn’t I be penalised by my current company if I have to start the job in 3 weeks time? Or am I allowed to just go for it and tell my current company that I’m leaving ?

This is what I’m trying to understand

Thanks

When the new job ask you what your notice period is, you tell them it's 8 weeks. Then when you get the job, you give 8 weeks notice to your current employer.

viques · 23/08/2021 00:28

If you are due to be able to claim redundancy they will probably be happy to release you early, especially if they are not planning on filling your post.

Kotatsu · 23/08/2021 00:30

What mary said.

Once you have a contract signed, you can try to negotiate with your current employment to reduce it - eg using holiday, or because you have access to sensitive info or you're going to a competitor too.

But 8 weeks notice is very, VERY standard - your new job will be expecting you to have a notice period.

Whadda · 23/08/2021 00:30

How long have you been there? Are you considering leaving before you’re eligible for a redundancy payment?

Pepperama · 23/08/2021 00:39

New employer will expect up to 3 months, but usually old employer won't hold you to it anyway if you're in the last three months of a fixed contract.

SnarkyBag · 23/08/2021 00:46

You tell new employer your notice period and they should base your start date around that. My notice period is 3 months.

Workconfused · 23/08/2021 00:52

Tbh just slightly over 2 years so my redundancy pay is just about a months salary worth

If it was the other way around, you would be grateful for the notice period, play fair.

Thanks @Kotatsu if I want to use my holidays to negotiate what I have left ( about 3.5 weeks) should I do this with HR or my manager before looking for a job?

Thank you

Yes that’s why I’m asking. Don’t really know the rules around this

At the same time I’m at risk of redundancy in 3 months I’m not really going to let a good job go because I have to wait till end of my contract when I know people do leave before the end of their contract

I’m happy to give an 8 week notice period just asking if there is a way I can Reduce that if I’m needed to start earlier like someone up there kindly suggested that I can negotiate with holidays

Just looking for options

It’s highly unlikely you’d “have” to start the new job so quickly. Most employers understand that people have notice periods to serve, and also factor that into the time it takes to recruit a new starter.

In the very unlikely event a new employer says you can ONLY have the job if you start immediately, you ask your current employer to release you early.

No point asking to negotiate a shorter notice by using holiday before you’ve even applied for jobs. You might not need it! Once you’ve got an offer, if it will require you to leave early, deal with it at that point.
