What are my employment prospects please?

Hello,

I would be very grateful to anyone who will take the time to read my post and advise me accordingly as I absolutely need help.

I am married, have 2 DCs, late thirties, have a BA and MA in Humanities. I am a British Citizen but not originally from the UK and both my degrees are from my country of origin. My work experience (7 years as a whole) before coming to the UK a decade ago was in media, PR/ communication as well as a stint as a part-time lecturer at university while working full time. This last one lasted only one year as I left for the UK at the end of that academic year. I also speak and write perfectly two languages besides English (English is not my native tongue).

I have never worked in the UK and never looked for work before now as I was raising my DCs full time. My youngest will start school in September and I would like to start looking for a job. Ideally, as a start, I would like something part time or flexible that I would enjoy doing. WFH would be ideal. What would you suggest I start doing now? What are my prospects? If you are a recruiter or a company boss, would my qualifications be attractive enough for you? What about the 10 year gap in my work experience? I've always enjoyed working and excelled in whatever I did.

Thanks

I did it for a bit and it wasn’t huge money but it wasn’t bad and pretty easy

Hi everyone. I'm thinking about my work prospects. My children are almost 3 but miss a school year as they were born after September. This may be a long post and applies if so but for anyone who may be able to make recommendations I'd be appreciative and grateful.

I have lost a sh*t load of money when ex dragged me through the courts for custody and it turned out he only wanted 2 nights in a month. This money is not recoverable. The maintenance he gives us in a month is less than what he earns in a day. I need a job that can pay lots (don't we all want that).

I've always had little confidence. It held me back my entire life in every way imaginable. I seem to have a new leash of life. I decided to self represent in court as I could no longer afford it. I'm delighted to say I smashed it. Very proud of myself and my ability to negotiate and speak with the judge when previously I wouldn't say boo to a goose. Literally like baby in the corner. I realise I want a job in negotiation. My work history is admin, exec assistant work, assistant project manager with lots of transferable skills. Can anyone recommend any work/jobs/training I can do? I really need to think about my children and their future hence earning lots. Im in my mid forties.

SplunkPostGres · 23/08/2021 07:32

You’d be highly sought after in my company; European Financial Services.

Maybe look for an exec assistant post to start with? With your education and language skills you’d do well and it would be an opportunity to develop further.

@Travailleuse from what you've written about your qualifications, I don't see anything about technology - it's an absolutely must-have skill for any work nowadays at the level you're likely to be interested with PG qualifications.

Even teaching will need skills if you need to build courses using online learning platforms.

How confident are you with IT? It's a gap you could start filling while you're looking at job options.

daisychain01 · 23/08/2021 08:00

Sorry I see you have two degrees rather than a PG, but still, you are well qualified in formal terms.

PlumpCushion · 23/08/2021 08:07

@Lovepeaceandcoffee you need to start your own thread so that people can respond to your questions properly. Good luck!

@jclm

Have a look at jobs in the civil service. Even if you get an entry level job you could quickly work your way up. They are extremely family friendly and offer flexible working and job shares etc.

Your local careers office/centre will offer free careers advice. If you contact them they will give you a free hour of advice.

I think after 10 years out, you would be looking to return at an 'easlier' level so to speak, to show your employer that you can adapt after the career break.

@jclm Thanks so much for your post. I never thought about the Civil Service! I am already looking at job vacancies around my area. Thank you :)

@ragged

French tutoring is something you might be able to set up now, but hours would be same times as when your kids are home. Could that work?
@ragged I don't think so, not when both are at home at the same time, that would be impossible :(
@Itsmemaggie thanks! The problem is that I live in a relatively small town hence the lack of big corporations, international firms, etc. But I will certainly have a look at what you suggest :)
But loads of companies are willing to consider working from home now. What about your nearest big city? Could you commute there a couple of times a week?

@ifidosaysomyself

Your PR and media degree experience can net you e-commerce positions. Stuff like managing e-commerce stores, customer support, and etc are all WFH too.

How familiar are you with the Shopify platform? Try and skim through this article real quick. It talks about selling on Shopify, the terms and software involved and gives you a brief on how the new internet commerce ecosystem works.

You can also look for remote jobs on indeed! There are a ton of part-time/full-time positions out there, and with your qualifications, you can land an HR position that is purely virtual, too! Lots of positions now are transitioning towards a completely remote set-up. Congrats on your youngest going into school by the way and welcome to your newfound freedom. Good luck love xoxo

@ifidosaysomyself Thanks so much for your informative post. I have heard about Shopify but never looked at it specifically. Now I will certainly do thanks to you :)

Thanks @daisychain01 I am very confident with IT and a fast learner. So that will not be a problem at all :)

Fab, you'll need to have good IT for Civil Service (not all our systems are 21 century mind you Grin )

Good luck with your job search, there are some very good job vacancies in CS on the CS Jobs website and lots of them offer remote working options.

Travailleuse · 23/08/2021 15:05

@Palavah I am not sure about commuting but it might be an option if the package is really attractive and the position is flexible enough to be able to be done around school pick ups and drop offs. Thanks :)

@MistySkiesAfterRain sounds good! Especially that I am familiar with dealing with it for my own residency and then British Citizenship and I will certainly give them lots of feedback to improve some of their services ;)

By all means approach organisations directly. I always find it more comfortable to my contacts, for anyone they know who might be interested in my skill set.

Saves the awkwardness some people might feel if they can't immediately help.

If they can, you might be in luck.

These people are also very well considered in our industry (media)

Hope you find a good and interesting role.
