Dyslexia NHS

Can I be discriminated against in a clinical field if I have dyslexia. Other people are being extra time to do their work on account of their physical disabilities all over the trust but I have been told I will not be allowed to have extra time. Is this actually illegal or discretionary?

Other people are irrelevant. What’s relevant is that your employer has to make “reasonable adjustments” to accommodate a disability. Whether extra time to complete work is a reasonable adjustment for dyslexia depends entirely on the nature of the work, the impact the dyslexia has on your ability to complete it on time, and whether extra time is reasonable in those circumstances.

Are you being penalised for not completing your work on time?

Has someone assessed your level of need? What adaptations have been put in place to support you? Additionally, do you have a formal diagnosis (I think this may make a difference here. Please don’t think I’m being rude)?
I think what others get is a red herring here- you need to look at how your specific learning difficulty is being supported.

You might be entitled to as assessment through Access to work to get the reasonable adjustments you need.

TBH its not me its a close friend, didn't want to get into explanations etc etc. I'll check out all of thse suggeations and see that the relevant diagnosis is in place and the assessments have been done. Many thanks.

Depends on the be job but reasonable adjustments should always be tried. My assistant is dyslexic and while I have some adjustments in place, I do pick up the areas she struggles with - I’m happy to do this because she’s got other strong elements. If she didn’t, it would put too much strain on me.

Work should allow adjustments for this! It’s discriminatory to be penalised against for having dyslexia.
