Career change hmm

MommaJP · 17/08/2021 14:12

So I've been in the same job for 3+years it works for hours very well round my child, I'm 28 years old.
I don't enjoy it though and want a job that I love
I wanted to be a midwife or a Sonographer but I don't have grades for university so I'd have to do a year at college so 4 years total but I need to earn aswell

How did you find a job you loved ?

I don't have advice unfortunately but am interested to see your replies! I'm 27 and work in admin.. I have no idea what I want to do with my life but I know it's not this .. I think I'd like something creative, but what? I have a degree in business, but I don't enjoy office work 🤷🏼‍♀️

countrytown · 18/08/2021 11:31

I had a career I loved but it was incompatible with dc so I did a complete change. I started with a very low paid very p/t role but changed jobs & have been with my current employer 3 yrs now. It works well around dc & I enjoy it. It's in finance & I do have a degree though. Would you consider studying?

countrytown · 18/08/2021 11:33

You could work a retail job around studying?

Coffeeanddarkchoc · 18/08/2021 11:35

@countrytown your new job which is in finance works well around your DC? I'm happy for you because I am in finance and the long hours are a nightmare so I'm interested in this thread as think I need a career change away from finance.

countrytown · 18/08/2021 11:42

DHs also works in finance but in a big London firm so I get the pressure & long hours. I'm public sector & work for a school so very different. I walk to work & very rarely work o/t & am still p/t. Obviously I don't earn what I could in the private sector but I have a fantastic work life balance.

MommaJP · 18/08/2021 12:30

I would be open to study definitely !!!

I currently work within an office but I know where I am I can never improve or get better money or do smithing else within the company, it's so boring and monotonous.

It's annoying because I dont look at one job and think oh my god that's it ?

I feel stuck between hours that work for childcare (single parent as-well) ughhhh and damn mom guilt.

It's very difficult even more so as a single parent. The trick is to try & get into a company that has progression & room for development.

Howshouldibehave · 18/08/2021 12:40

I think sonography would be longer than 4 years, as well. Once you’ve done the radiography training, you’d need to specialise at masters level.

BadgeronaMoped · 18/08/2021 12:53

The future nurses/midwives/paramedics on my access course all did bank HCA shifts at the local hospital which fitted around their studies/childcare. Their HCA work also provided good experience which could be talked about during their university interviews.

BadgeronaMoped · 18/08/2021 12:54

Also, if you're studying for one of the allied health professions you will be eligible for a training grant every year during your degree, it's the NHS Learning Support Fund. Good luck with whatever you decide!

BadgeronaMoped · 18/08/2021 12:56

Also, sorry keep having random thoughts... I used the career profiler quiz tool on Prospects.org when I was thinking about re-training, it gave me lots of different role options.

MommaJP · 18/08/2021 18:58

I will look into the NHS fund, thank you all.

Feel a little relieved.

Completely with you OP. Currently in admin, bored stiff but so easy to be flexible and work from home if i need to do school run that day etc. However.... working in maternity also appeals to me. Im considering applying for a maternity support assistant role just to be in that environment but am so scared of the change and shift work being not particularly family friendly! I couldn't do the commitment of studying and uni but I'm hoping that being a MA may scratch that itch perhaps.

It's just so scary to think what would I enjoy rather than always thinking what does mama need to do!

MommaJP · 27/08/2021 15:27

@pancakes22 oh my gosh I totally get you!
If it works go for it

Apprenticeship - Dental Nursing?

hippychick10 · 27/08/2021 15:46

Get a job as an HCA on a maternity ward, and then train as a nursing associate whilst you are working there. Then onto a nursing degree to be a registered nurse!

Good luck! X

MommaJP · 17/09/2021 12:13

Thank you all!

I have done the access course so I can go to uni for nursing fingers crossed.
