Career change from Radiography

sickofmyjob · 10/08/2021 14:13

Has anyone made the change from Radiography into a new career?
I feel like I probably have lots of transferable skills but don't know how to find a new path. I've been a lecturer as well so that adds some strings to my bow.
I just want to do something else preferably not healthcare and a job that is flexible, part time and ideally home based although I know I'm asking for a lot. Any ideas?

There are lots of available courses to help you train for different roles and use your transferable skills in different roles. But look at job agencies and job websites that offer part time jobs. With the pandemic there is a lot of WFH roles, so hopefully you should be able to find one.

Why do you want to change career, how much do you hope to earn and what do you mean by flexible/part time? These will all impact what your options are and what avenues you might be able to explore.

Cuious to know what you come up with! What would you like to do?

I'm bored. I've been doing it for a while. I feel like I've gotten all I can out of it mentally. The only progression is management which is a horrific prospect. I currently work two days a week. I'd be happy to work more if weekends, home working etc were part of it. I guess programming, admin or something to do with the environment are the areas I'm interested in but I don't really know.

It's just hard to see how people are going to hire someone in a clinical job to do something non clinical. It feels really difficult to escape clinical work for something else.

specialise? Research role? What about data analyst type jobs - disclaimer I don't know the skills or pathway.

How about staying in medical imaging but on the industry side? CT etc. manufacturers all have teams of clinical advisors to support development. Lots work from home, especially now, and PT can be negotiated.

LegalUtopia · 11/08/2021 10:03

There should be lots of transferable skills from your work that you can use in a different background, even if it is clinical.

Have specialised. Have worked in research. I just don't feel like there's anything else.

I was offered a job doing that a while ago but it still involves a lot of travel unfortunately.

I've moved from Radiography to commissioning. I work for a CCG in an office based 9-5 role (WFH) now. Loads of roles available for clinically trained staff, opportunities to retain your registration if you want. I'd suggest maybe roles like quality, project management and service commissioning.

MargotMoon · 11/08/2021 11:29

@sickofmyjob Do you mind if I ask how you got into radiology? Was it something you knew you wanted to do so did the appropriate training to get there directly, or was it via a related role and you shifted towards radiology?

I did a degree course at uni. It's a 3 year undergraduate BSc.

Thank you that sounds interesting I'll have a look at those sort of jobs. Did you have to get experience in that area first or was it a direct move?

@sickofmyjob - I just applied for everything and anything on NHS Jobs that I thought my skills could transfer to. You need to make it very clear how your skills are transferrable in your applications. My first non radiography role was in sexual health... obviously completely unrelated but I had data skills, project management experience, people skills, etc etc. This led onto a wide variety of commissioning roles in a range of specialties. Much more opportunity for progression and promotion compared to radiography too.

Alternatively, since your are already part time, could you get a part time Sunday only contract, I am a band 6 and am contracted to work a 12 hour shift on a Sunday which attracts time +60%. Once I'm top of band 6 I'll earn £19k a year for it (and that's before late finishes which in my profession is most shifts at the moment Sad ).

This would give you the opportunity to try out some new careers and get some quality experience even if it is in lower pay, without finding yourself committed due to money.

Radgo02 · 11/01/2023 23:01

I wonder what you decided to do… I find myself in your situation and cannot see many non-clinical options…

IlooklikeRonnieCorbett · 12/01/2023 10:49

Clinical coding is interesting for clinicians wanting a move, some interesting specialist roles within the field itself and you'd probably sail through the initial training and exams.
