Returning from maternity leave - what would you want to know/hear

One of my staff is due to return from maternity leave and is coming in for a chat to discuss her return to work.
It's a while since I did this myself, and I remember being worried I'd have lost my edge..not that I needed to have worried as it turned out.
For those of you who've returned more recently, what were your concerns and what could your boss have done to allay them?

It would have been nice to have an update on staff/role changes. I only got a brief 5 minutes chat when a short written brief would have been more helpful.
I spent weeks working out what had changed, who was responsible for what etc.

My concern was what the proceedure would be when LOs poorly and time off needed (is it paid / unpaid etc).

I was still breast feeding so maybe an idea of where this could be done in privacy if needs be.
The option of flexibility with my hours if necessary or how i could work around my child being ill.
An update of any changes r/e other staff and the job.
To be greeted with a feeling of being missed so i felt valued and alleviate some of the guilt of leaving child.
Up to date info on claiming help with child care etc.

Practical stuff - what scattyspice says, plus just what you expect her to do for, say, the first week.

And ALL the gossip and developments, especially anything that may prevent her putting her foot in it (like if anyone got divorced or passed over for promotion or suchlike).

I'm in my fourth week of study leave right now and even after such a short period I'm going to need an extensive debrief on who's left, who's joined, who's in a huff ...

everybody has great ideas, just wanted to say what a lovely employer you are for being concerned about this

employmentquery · 28/11/2007 12:48

That's all very useful, thanks.

I'd forgotten phone numbers too when I came back myself from ML..so that's a particularly good thought.

She may ask for flexible working, which is fine as several people work flexibly already.

And the company has very good paid parental leave on offer for emergency childcare/sickness situations.

She hasn't had a straightforward time with pg - I really do want her to feel welcomed back - her skills are very valued & I'll make sure she knows that.
