Terrible, terrible interview!!!

Kicking myself. Was so well prepared but absolutely flunked my interview for promotion. Was being interviewed by 4 managers and I knew all of them which made me even more nervous. I missed out so much and gave such crappy vague answers. My interview only lasted 20 mins. I definitely haven't got it which is so embarrassing. Ugh. Anyone relate?

Yes! I did the same for my top choice University. Absolutely blew it and then had to wait 12 weeks for the rejection.

Fingers crossed it wasn’t as bad as you think

FairyAtTheBottomOfTheGarden · 03/08/2021 13:51

My best worst one was when I knew I was doing badly then when the interviewer took the lift to reception with me I shook his hand then promptly tripped and fell flat on my face.
I didn't get the job but to be fair I didn't want it after that!

I hope you've done better than you think, you never know what the competition was like, you may have shone!

PostmanSplat · 03/08/2021 13:52

I did this last week. Didn’t get the job.
Ask for feedback and incorporate it in to your notes for next time. I know it sucks but try and look at it as a positive and learn from it 💐

I agree with this. You never know though, if they all know you they may factor that into their decision and understand you were nervous in your interview.

I'm cringing so badly right Now

I had an interview last November, very excited about it, with the president of a university college. I referred to him by his first name, not once but three fecking times! 😆 I don’t know why I did it as I know how to refer to posh academics. 🤣

AlmostSummer21 · 03/08/2021 14:36

How familiar are they with your work?

floofycroissant · 03/08/2021 14:40

Pretty sure I walked out of an interview with my skirt ridden up over my arse, baring my Nora Batty 100d tights to the whole office floor... So it really could be worse.

floofycroissant · 03/08/2021 14:41

But I do get how you feel, the more I care about getting a job the crapper I am in the interview. Nerves get the better of me

OttilieStonelady · 03/08/2021 20:34

@AlmostSummer21

How familiar are they with your work?
Very. They know I can do it. But they tend to go off interview scores

When will you find out?

EmmaC78 · 03/08/2021 22:31

I did the same last week, spent ages on submitting a really good application form, did loads of prep for it and the just let the nerves get to me and gave some really poor answers. I am still really disappointed.

HollowTalk · 03/08/2021 22:33

I hope they all looked at each other and agreed not to go on the interview! Best of luck, OP.

RemoteControlledSheep · 04/08/2021 08:33

I get so frustrated when companies who know your work base a promotion on an interview - it just feels back to front. You interview someone because you don't know their work! I hope if your work is good enough - they see sense, know you can do the job and give you the promotion.

OttilieStonelady · 04/08/2021 20:19

I guess they have to make it fair for external applicants. I hate this bit. I feel like I can't even do a follow up as they're my colleagues!

This happened to me, I messaged the lead interviewer and was honest that nerves overcame me, and apologised for wasting his time.

This director and I didn’t have a good relationship , he knew I was really competent but we had never had any one on one time, and we only knew each other to say hello in the corridor etc.

He I think has recognised this, and has made so much effort to get to know me, and this in turn has lead me to get to know him. I think I would have minimal nerves now if I was in the position.

PTW1234 · 04/08/2021 20:25

Also I didn’t get the job, but a better internal opportunity came up instead, so don’t kick yourself!

raffle · 04/08/2021 20:29

I went to interview for a place on a social work degree, straight after I had graduated from uni, so had next to no interview experience. It did not go well. I was turning myself inside out with embarrassment at myself DURING the interview, it was that bad!

ThisIsM · 04/08/2021 20:42

Oh gawd sorry to hear this but it's actually kind of comforting - not the embarrassing feeling for you of course but I feel like we never hear about people not getting the jobs in real life, no one ever talks about it, as if failure is shameful. Then it feels so crap when you don't get the job because you feel like everyone else is! But the reality must be we don't get more jobs than we do. So hope there is a little comfort in solidarity. I've had some awful interviews too. Still wishing you luck that it went better than you thought. I'm sure a follow up email saying nerves got the better of you would be good - chalk it up to experience and next time will go better. I like the saying , I don't lose, I learn.

BalladOfBarryAndFreda · 04/08/2021 20:48

The same happened to me years ago, OP. I knew the job was coming up and had been encouraged to apply and told by numerous people (including the recruiters) ‘you’re a shoe-in’. Sure enough, applied and got an interview for it and it was jokingly referred to as ‘Ballad’s job’. Anyway, the interview rolled around and as karma would have it, I totally blew it. Went utterly blank and babbled nervously, made a complete twat of myself. As it was an internal job I then had to style out the ‘so how did it go?’, ‘when do you start?’ questions for weeks. Hideous.

Flowers for you

imacuddler · 04/08/2021 20:49

You never know! At least if you don't get the job you know it isn't down to your work!
I agree with poster above that we don't often hear about people not getting jobs as if failure is shameful.
In fact I think that is me! When in fact it's a normal part of life.

SJaneS49 · 05/08/2021 18:03

Completely normal! If you’ve not interviewed for a while the first one off the block is usually dreadful and a learning experience more than anything else. I’m sorry it was an internal role you were really keen on. Dust yourself off, other opportunities will come up and I’d guarantee that the next interview you do will be a lot smoother!
