No wifi for two weeks - has anyone used a dongle to work from home? Or another solution?

Just that basically. I can go into the office but often need to also work in the evening once the kids are in bed.

Thanks a lot

Huawei E5576, CAT 4, Portable 4G Low Cost Travel Wi-Fi, Roams on all World Networks, Genuine UK Warranty Stock, with FREE SMARTY SIM- White
Amazon's
Choice

for "huawei wifi"
Sorry I don't know how to do links!! Buy buy one of these, currently on Amazon with a free smarty sim. You will need to set up a Smarty account, you can get unlimited WiFi with it for £20 a month and cancel anytime. We have one in our holiday home and it works really well.

@Gettingonabitnow you are welcome. I always keep it handy and charged up at home just in case we have a power cut as I also work from home now.

Can you tether to your phone ?

StealthPolarBear · 01/08/2021 07:17

Yes I do this regularly with an ee dongle

Gettingonabitnow · 01/08/2021 08:49

@LIZS do you mean like a hotspot? I’ve never actually tried.

Yes, not sure if all phones offer it and it would use data, but may be cheaper even if you need to temporarily get extra allowance.

I work from our holiday home for a week or so at a time and hotspot from my phone and it works fine. No issue with Zoom / Teams etc. Just make sure that tethering is included in your contract, and you have enough data.

pitterpatterrain · 01/08/2021 09:02

I also tether from my (work) phone when I need to - the data is included and if you have decent 4G it can work reasonably well (video calls etc)

I use a Netgear Nighthawk M1, it’s quite expensive (£200-300) but very reliable. Useful to take on holiday too!

flameycakes · 01/08/2021 11:06

I use the hotspot on my phone, it is excellent, I have unlimited data and I'm able to run 3/4 devices of it with no bother.

We have a box of dongles that we use as backup for this type of situation but I'd definitely check coverage first - our mobile provision where we live, despite being a reasonably large town, is so bad we refer to EE as "Nothing Nowhere" - our best option so far has been Tesco Mobile (and yes, we really have tried just about every provider out there). We also have a TP-Link Mifi thingie that allows you to change phone cards, and I have resorted in the past to library WiFi (just as flaky, sadly) and also coworking space WiFi (much better). I do sometimes use the data allowance on our mobile contract for things like Teams, Zoom, the (now very) occasional Skype call etc.
