Chase an interview?

shallIswim · 31/07/2021 09:13

Would you call an employer a short while after closing date of you hadn't yet heard about an interview? If you knew you were bang on qualified for a job?
Is it a turn off?
Or is it a thing to do?
Just a polite 'I applied... was wondering when we might hear about interviews... it's a job which I'm very excited about...' kind of thing

Asking for a relative so don't know precise details.

It can't harm to do so but I'm not sure I'd bother myself.
A lot of radio silence in this game, I just assume they'll get back to me if they want to shortlist and not bother if they don't

When was the closing date?

AlexaShutUp · 31/07/2021 11:49

No. As a recruiter, it would irritate me. It would make no difference to whether we interview you or not.

If you are genuinely a great fit for the job, we will contact you when we are ready. Lots of people think they're a good fit but aren't. It just comes across as impatient if you chase.

My organisation will always contact you to tell you if you have been unsuccessful, also. I know some places don't, and I think that's pretty crap tbh.

Sometime last week I think

I'd leave it.... you don't want to create a bad impression if they were thinking of shortlisting you and it won't make any difference if they don't.

Do it, what have you got to lose

BuffySummersReportingforSanity · 31/07/2021 11:56

Don't do it.

You can never know how qualified you are for a job in comparison to the rest of the candidate pool. If they want to interview you, they will not forget to contact you. Absolutely the only thing you will achieve is to look presumptuous and irritate the hiring manager.

shallIswim · 31/07/2021 12:06

Right the balance is I should tell her to be patient. Thanks! X

If you mean the week just gone then definitely be patient. They will have to shortlist all candidates and, if anything like my workplace, this can take a while. We also had a lot of staff on leave this week so would have taken longer than usual. If you've heard nothing by the end of next week then an email would be fine.

TDLMTB · 31/07/2021 13:30

It would irritate me - and potentially come off sounding a little bit desperate rather than enthusiastic. I would imagine they decided to wait till closing date to start the first sift - so they could make a proper comparison. Hopefully they will respond soon - but chasing them won't make that happen any quicker.

NannyAndJohn · 31/07/2021 13:37

They very likely received hundreds (if not thousands) of applications so don't have time to send out rejection emails to everyone.

Zarene · 31/07/2021 14:16

If you must, email. But leave it longer than a week!

Don't phone. It would piss me off to have you interrupt me needlessly, and you'd always seem needy.

(I recruit a lot)

shallIswim · 31/07/2021 16:35

Gosh what a lot of recruiters there are on here!
Thanks guys.
Will pass on the wisdom x

Yes! I have done this before, got the job and worked there for five years
I submitted my application, my previous skills and experience ticked every box and some. I didn’t hear anything and wondered where I had gone so very wrong on my application, so I rang to ask for feedback. Nobody was able to locate my application.
Turned out my application had gone to the inbox of a HR assistant who had just left.
It managed to be retrieved, I got a call a few hours later inviting me to interview and got the job.

shallIswim · 03/08/2021 07:37

Well yes, funny because this happened to a friend's daughter (for a job she subsequently got in Whitehall of all places). That's why I asked the question really.
All the professionals on here tho say very firmly 'No, don't be a pain and chase'.
Anyway, the workplace has got back and an assessment is now in train so I guess my mate is in the system.
Thanks all!
