Redundancy; only person in my team not to be "role matched"

Hoping someone with a bit more experience in these matters can help! I've just received notification that my whole team is at risk of redundancy as part of a wider corporate restructure; not a surprise to anyone on the team. What is a surprise is that everyone else (10 people) has been told their roles "map over" into the new structure. I'm the only one who has been told that my role doesn't "map".

Thing is, there's a vacant role on the new team with an equivalent job title, same level, same pay, etc etc, and the other people at my level have been moved over to those roles (e.g. if I'm Assistant for NE and my colleague is Assistant for SE, he's been offered a new role called Admin for SE, but I've been told Admin for NE isn't a match for my role). I've queried this with my line manager who has told me he doesn't see my "face fitting" in the new role; but surely that isn't his decision to make right now?

I'm the only person in the team who has caring responsibilities and he's never been subtle about his opinion this means I lack commitment. But surely I can't just be written out like this when the role is right there??

They legally need to offer you an equivalent role if it exists. There can be other candidates for that role, clearly, so it’s who is the best fit, but there needs to be a reason other than your face doesn’t fit.

Not 100% certain but I would definitely anticipate that that would be unfair unless they could show you have a different skill set from the current SE Your Role that means you therefore can't possibly do New Role?

Your face not fitting is totally irrelevant, they can't make you redundant if your role isn't redundant, which if they've mapped everyone across it doesn't sound like it is

You need an email or paper trail to document the face not fitting comment. The comment shows that they are pre- judging the outcome of the redundancy process and that the decision is personal, rather than being based on the role's requirement.

Speak to ACAS

This and go and query with HR why you've not been mapped? In my large organisation they would have to prove the job responsibilities and tasks had been changed by at least 30% and that's why it's been resourced.

I've queried this with my line manager who has told me he doesn't see my "face fitting" in the new role wow. Can you follow this up in an email? And speak to HR.

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 29/07/2021 19:49

Definetly get this down in writing somewhere (can you email HR with clarification on the roles / comparison with the SE role / say "Manager has said my face doesnt fit the role - please could you give a greater depth of explaination".

Contact ACAS and union just in case.

Thank you so much to everyone who has responded, I've been in shock and not thinking clearly for the last few hours. Just dropped HR an email to discuss the decision, will contact ACAS in the morning! Decided me and my face aren't giving up without a fight!

I should have added ..your boss sounds like a sexist arse, redundancy process are always stressful, good luck with HR. Or take the opposite and apply for a job in another team and use the opportunity for a better job and manager.

Aprilx · 31/07/2021 21:23

Get hold of the job description of the role you think your should map to and also keep a copy of your own job description. If they are similar then the new role should be a suitable alternative and the employer is required to offer it to you (unless there are other people in the running, in which case they need to follow a fair process to determine who gets it).

The comment on face not fitting is very poor too, but I guess it would be hard to prove that now, although if you can evidence it in some way that would be good.
