Screwed over big time - what to do next?

I’ve been working above my contracted level for a long time now, for a narcissistic boss whose moods/ideas/demands flip-flop numerous times a day. In the main I enjoy my role and have got a lot out of it, it’s safe and secure etc. and I’ve been able to mitigate the time I spend with said boss a lot over the last year working from home.

Recently I have got to the point where I’m basically doing a huge part of her role, she’s passing my ideas/reports etc off as her own and I’m not getting any credit for it. It’s soul destroying. She has many issues in her personal life and I’ve lost count of the number of times she’s dropped me in it and I’ve had to stand in for her as she’s lurched from one crisis to the next.

So - here’s the crunch. I went to HR and asked for my job description to be reviewed. I documented all of the extra tasks I do and they agreed that I needed to be bumped up the pay ladder/band/boundary. And then have me the meanest possible pay rise they could (because guess who had to authorize that - yep - evil boss!). I am broken. It is such a slap in the fact. What do I do?

Should proofread better. Gave and face!

leave , just move on somewhere else.

LtDansleg · 16/07/2021 17:59

Stand up for yourself. Either ask for more money, or go back to your original role but refuse to take on the extra work.

Justmuddlingalong · 16/07/2021 18:02

Refuse. Work to your current contract and start looking for a job elsewhere.

Foolsrule · 16/07/2021 18:03

@LtDansleg - I did say I wouldn’t continue to do all of the extra and essentially rejected the new contract. I have never done anything like this before but sometimes you have to make a stand. It’s heartbreaking in some ways as I have given so much and now it’s been thrown back in my face. I feel pushed out.

Go back to HR and say that the renumeration is insufficient, and point to the pay associated with other similar roles elsewhere?

And definitely be prepared to leave.

Work out your salary expectations ie benchmark to industry, go back say I would like £x, and here's why. No manager ever gave more money than they have to. Your mistake was not setting the bar.

If you don't get it, consider your options.

Sagaris · 16/07/2021 18:15

I had similar a few years ago - I was such a mug and took up the slack when 2 senior officers left - my then manager, as well as being a bully, put as many obstacles in my way as he could, saying they would 'consider' my request when I collected the 'evidence' they required. All while expecting me to do all the extra work. I requested a change of department, which to my surprise, was granted. I kept pushing for a regrade and was continually refused. So, I carried a copy of my job description with me, and worked to it. Rigidly! So, after 4 years, my job was suddenly regraded to exactly what I requested. So yes, work to rule, revert to your original job spec - it worked for me, just wish I'd done it sooner.

Just find something else - don't stay somewhere you are not appreciated

Foolsrule · 16/07/2021 18:46

I think that is the only option really.

Sorry but I agree with the others saying leave. Employers like this won’t change and moving jobs is the quickest, easiest way to move up the career path.

TSSDNCOP · 16/07/2021 23:25

Don't Chuck the baby out with the bath water - go back with some numbers first.

Even if they give you the financial reward you want, she will still be there. Find something else.
