Im currently doing cleaning work, (which is quite a money spinner) but im bored & want more out of life. Any suggestions on what I could do? Unfortunately I dont have any qualifications. (Which I realise narrows down the field a lot)
Id love to go back to college & re train, (Id love to do nursing, but thats light years away with no formal qualifications & no support at home with the varied shift patterns) or get back into child care. (I used to be a Nanny many years ago) Not sure how to go about it though. Any ideas?
Thanks.

My SIL is training to be a teaching assistant at the mo.She is going to college 1 day per week alongside the practical stuff in school.I think it is an NVQ thing. Will try to find out.Anyhow it fits in with school hours.

Pixiefish · 25/11/2007 20:50

Lots of schools will take you on with no formal quals to be a TA and train you on the job

tissy · 25/11/2007 20:50

NHS do, in some cases

health care assistant?

wrinklytum · 25/11/2007 20:51

Health care assistant?(auxiliary nurse).Try the NHS website for details. It would be shifts, though. Some areas do Mon-Fri if you were clinic based, though.

Great minds,Tissy

Someone I know works at Boots. They allow her to take school holidays off without pay.

I'm a TA so get all the school holidays off. It saves trying to organise childcare for my DC and I love the job too which is an added bonus!

Councils are often very enlightened regarding working hours - I work school hours, term time only for the county council. It's an admin post, but not basic clerical stuff, and there are a lot of other people doing all types of jobs that are on similar terms. Councils are also very good on training, so you can enhance your prospects as you work . Jobs usually advertised in the local press, or look on their website.

Schools, councils, universities, colleges, the Civil Service

pointydog · 25/11/2007 21:06

I've seen banks, financial institutions offering work to fit in with childcare. Might be call centre type stuff, don;t remember.

Childmiding? Lots of areas are crying out for them

SparklePrincess · 25/11/2007 21:20

Thanks everyone. Didnt expect to get so many replies so quickly. Will look into all of them. My main problem is im restricted by my location (being 40 minutes drive away from major towns with big shops etc) Will have to scour the papers for TA jobs I think.

Tax office - don't do it - it must be one of the few perks. They even gave me a temporary job, when what I'd applied for was a permanent post . Saying that, I was happier doing temp work, until I met my best friend.

moondog · 25/11/2007 21:36

I'm a salt and some of our assistants have this.

what about working in a preschool?

gigglewitch · 25/11/2007 23:55

thought of hunting on your local authority website? all sorts of posts are now going 'flexible' and family-friendly.
also have you thought of therapy assistants posts - like occupational therapy, speech therapy, physio - all of these have assistants. Particularly in speech therapy IME there are a lot of support posts which are working predominantly in special ed schools (this is my line of work, y'see) and although they are employed by the NHS they get to work in all sorts of situations.
Can you drive? this would open heaps of doors for your choice in this sort of work.

DrBunsentheHarpsichordCarrier · 25/11/2007 23:56

also, libraries?
def civil service worth looking into

gigglewitch · 26/11/2007 00:00

oy harpsi, are you after the longest name on MN record?

DrBunsentheHarpsichordCarrier · 26/11/2007 00:02

I wanted to be ItsNotEasyBeingAGreenHarpsichordCarrier
but Too Long apparently

If you would like to do nursing, how about looking at doing an access course.I'm not sure how many days a week it takes now but when a friend did one several years ago,it was only 2 days a week.A health care assistants job might fit the bill, if you could get into a clinic, that would be day time hours. You can also possibly get secondment for your nursing qualification from that when you are ready to make your leap into nursing. Nursing is a great idea as there are so many different ares both within the NHS and without. We know someone (a nurse) who has just got a job ferrying patients (ferrying isprobably not the correct word) from the islands into the mainland and back out again!
Some one else my partner knows is a cleanner and has applied for a job on the bank as a night HCA on community and been successful.
Good luck!

gigglewitch · 26/11/2007 00:04

surely not.
too long? how rude of MN

gigglewitch · 26/11/2007 00:09

had another idea
healthcare agencies - the pay can be quite good (choose carefully as it may also be quite bad) this means that you can tell them your availability, work when you wish and be 'unavailable' when you need to. The downer of this is obv no work=not paid, but people i work with who do this just do a bit extra and save it for when they are off

I am employed term time only (and its for my dss private school too!) but it is for another Mum at the school, who has her own business.

Try to think outside the box, and see if there are any opportunities staring you in the face. Sorry don't have any further suggestions
