How does your workplace manage flexible working?

My workplace is introducing flexible working, where staff will have the option of working from home up to two days a week (does not have to be the same two days every week) and being flexible with hours (but with core hours between 10 and 4).

Does anyone have experience of how their company successfully manage this with regard to staff knowing each other’s whereabouts, eg if they are on leave, WFH, starting at 10 or out at external meetings (around half the staff members have external meetings at least once a week).

Not sure if it’s relevant but it’s about 45ish people spilt in to four teams, plus four admin staff. Four members of staff are based in different locations and three work from hone full time.

Interested to hear others’ procedures. Thanks in advance!

Ours are creating a new policy.

Big company 2 departments 2 managers. Currently we are all still wfh and one manager says the previous office hours are followed and everyone does this.

The other says do any work pattern- just cover your hours!

Be interesting to see other responses.

We add our place of work to diaries which are open / shared

We have common team meetings when you have to be in for that face to face meeting once a week

It works well

As pp, I would suggest shared calendars and inputting your whereabouts in that.

We have it on calendars which everyone in the company can see.
But I work somewhere that’s been flexible for years, with staff either in one of the several offices, at home, or at a client site. So people are very used to colleagues being all over the place for either work reasons, or personal preference.

That’s good to know, thanks for sharing. I think I was perhaps over complicating things in my mind.

At my place of work I think it will be a bit of a learning curve and actually getting the staff to enter stuff in their calendars - they aren’t the best at adhering to rules (eg completing timesheets) but it’s in their interests to as otherwise it’ll be taken away! (There’s a bit of a lack of trust from the Directors as there’s been a few bad eggs that have taken the piss during WFH so far and we work in an industry where presenteeism is a strongly held believe for a lot of senior staff).
