Advice for work and sickness

Hi all, advice please.

I messaged my boss asking if I could come into work later (I work in a small family run restaurant) as I was feeling pregnancy sick.
I checked cover was sufficient so I wasn’t really screwing them over and my bosses responded with “urm there’s nothing I can say” which made me feel really uncomfortable and guilty/pressured to go in.

Am I being sensitive or is it very unprofessional on his part? I have never called in sick before.

Bit of a weird response to be honest

I think you maybe could have phrased it better to your boss-asking if they minded puts them in an awkward position. It might have been better just telling rather than asking

I think you’re right. I was trying to be nice when I should have been more direct.

I think the way you worded it didn’t leave them much room to respond, I am not sure what they could have said. I wouldn’t have wanted to put into writing that it is ok to come into work late either. Going forward you need to communicate better and if you are too ill to come in you say so, you don’t ask if it is ok.

Does your employer know you are pregnant? If so there's nothing he/she can say because sickness during pregnancy is protected. So I get the "ummm nothing I can say" reply. But if it were me I'd have just replied to you "yes sure, hope you feel better see you later" 🤷🏻‍♀️

Yes they do know. I just think it was unprofessional and going forward I will be more direct. Hmm

They were right though. What would you have done if they said no, you had to come in as planned? Because either you are too sick to work(why you messaged) or you're not.
