Applying for a job in your 50s

I've read everything I can about this, keeping up to date with tech, blurring your age where possible in your application etc.

Any other tips?

Don't put your date of birth. They can work it out from education dates anyway. The most recent places I have worked in (higher education) have a lot of people in the prime of their careers in their 50s/60s.

But it's obvious from the year that I graduated and the fact that I'm old enough to have done 'O' levels.

I've thought about changing this to GCSEs, but on forms where they ask for the years that you attended schools, university, did jobs it's obvious, unless I lie and knock 10 years off, but I don't feel comforable about lying.

Don't put GCSEs or O levels - A levels and degree will suffice. No date. Also I think you could remove date of degree too. 53 here Smile

Yes, just leave off dates where possible. Not lying just not essential info.

Some of the forms I'm completed have had sections about 'school you attended', 'what years' etc (I guess they were definitely looking for someone younger!).

So it's either leave them out and not complete the form properly, or put them in.

Apply for employers that definitely won't discriminate (I'm in CS and we don't ask for education dates or anything like that)!

Make sure you are tailoring your achievements to match the role - don't sell yourself as a senior manager with loads of experience if you are going for a more junior job - they will assume you are just filling time till you find something more senior - which is less of a problem if there is very little training needed to be successful.

Try applying when you have just turned 60! I did okay in my 50s, this is a whole different ballgame!
Even NHS blatantly discriminated me on a band 2 entry level post, ( worked in NHS up to band 3 for 15 years). The only criteria on this post was basically you had to attend school! I evidenced everything in the personal spec and didn’t even get shortlisted!
I expected them to cover their back by at least offering an interview, then giving some pathetic excuse why I didn’t get the job.
The email to tell me I wasn’t shortlisted even had the nerve to tell me not to seek feedback!

@Cazz246 I've recently taken a lady on in her 60s (on promotion from elsewhere). She's excellent and her age certainly didn't factor into my decision!
