Lifeguard interview

Hi, ds age 16 has an interview for a lifeguarding position at the local council pool next week.
Training is provided for the chosen person, so he hasn't got the qualification or any experience.
It's a swimming test, then if you pass that you have an interview.
Has anyone got any clue as to what they will ask? I am assuming it will be questions based on the job description, maybe scenarios. How tough will they be on a 16 year old?
Thanks in advance 😊

I used to work as a lifeguard. I'd imagine they will ask him questions related to his awareness of basic water safety and first aid.
Even if full training is provided I think he should read up on what pool lifeguarding entails, how to recognise drowning and hazards at the pool - there are many.
Part of my role was to check the levels of chlorine and ph levels in the pool throughout the day and also lots and lots of cleaning and squeegeeing!
It's a job with a lot of responsibility but I always found it to be well paid and I never had to look to hard for student work throughout my teens and early twenties. There's the possibility of further training for beach lifeguarding etc. too.
Good luck to your son!

The RNLI website is a good place to do some research rnli.org/magazine/magazine-featured-list/2017/march/how-to-recognise-drowning-its-not-like-the-movies

That sounds good, ds paid £250 a couple of years ago to do his training course.

They'll assess if he has got the ability to go underwater and retrieve an item, swim a certain distance etc I would think.
Also they may ask his response in a given situation and what he thinks the job entails.
I would think they will want to somehow assess whether he seems likely to take the responsibility seriously and be flexible and reliable, as with most jobs.
It's a good opportunity. Useful training and really not a bad job at all.

He passed the swimming test and the interview!
He's got six full days of training which starts next week, so proud of him.
Thanks for the advice, sure it helped 😊

That's fab @Ruth2009, well done to your DS. I hope he enjoys the training and his new job. I'm sure he will find it opens many doors for work opportunities in the future not to mention the important first aid and rescue skills it will teach him which will last a lifetime. Congratulations!

Congratulations, my DS started at that age and then worked whilst at uni.

Well done him, can I ask what area you are in?
As I said upthread ds1 paid to do his course a couple of years ago, and ds2 is interested in doing it when he turns 16.
Would be good if he could get the training paid for.
