Redundancy and new job - need HR experts!

Hello,

I currently work three days per week, the contract expired and the new role offered to me was not in line with my skillet so I have been offered voluntary redundancy.

I don't know the exact details until Tuesday but they have mentioned "pay in lieu of notice" and I may or may not have to work my notice.

My question is if I got another job immediately but it was part time too and didn't fall on my current contracted hours, would that effect my redundancy package? I don't really want to mention it if I don't have to as surely it's just a second job? It would start after the last contracted day but inside the notice period....

Are the employers linked in anyway, both local authority schools etc? Or no link in anyway?

No link in anyway, the current job is media, the new one catering

It won't affect your package if there is no link at all but it would affect the tax you pay on earnings during your notice period as you'd be employed by two different employers for more hours. Safest bet is to push for PILON and end your employment with original employer and then start at the new place.

Anything you start before your leave date will be classed as a second job and subject to no personal allowance for tax purposes. Your current employer may have a conflict of interest clause that stops you doing that so best check. However if your not working your notice and they’re paying PILON up front then taking a new job after your leave but before your notice would end is fine as you officially are no longer employed after leave date.

Thank you so much for your replies! I think they said Tuesday would be my last day and the new job would potentially start the day after so that should be okay should it? I don't mind losing tax but don't want to pay back any redundancy or PILON if I don't have to. They are sending me a letter today with more details on so I may post again about thar if it says anything confusing!

If you lined up a role in an alternate part of the same organisation, then you would be redeployed rather than made redundant so you would never see the redundancy payment in the first place in that case. But it doesn’t sound like this is what is happening, it sounds like you are going to a completely different employer, in which case of course you do not need to pay redundancy money back, I am a bit confused as to why you think you might need to? You are allowed to work again. 🙂

If your jobs overlap, your income tax may be over collected whilst working both. However this would be a temporary thing, as income tax is cumulative, once you are in one job and your tax code is corrected, the deductions will correct automatically over subsequent pay runs.
