Redundancy, what happens if...

Proposal is five identical jobs in different areas are made redundant, with one job at that level created which is largely similar to the five jobs going but a 'new' job.

The five jobs going will be replaced with four jobs at a lower grade.

I don't like new job at my level. I am also part time and this job is full time, which I can't do due to childcare now as have just returned from maternity leave. Is it bad if I don't apply for it?

Also, can work argue that a job the grade below mine is a suitable alternative vacancy even if the salary is different, and try to make me take it? I don't think they will want to pay me redundancy money, but I can't afford the salary drop.

Would they give you pay protection for X months if you were allocated the lower grade job?

Legally they must offer you the lower paid job, but you do not have to accept it if the salary is lower. If you choose not to accept it then you retain your eligibility to severance

I think there is pay protection of a year. Does that change things?

I feel like I have been snookered to be honest. They know I can't do full time now, and if I took one of the lower graded jobs I'd have to work five days but we can't afford nursery for five days. DH can't do part time in his line of work either Sad

If you take the higher paid role can you afford nursery?

If your income is low so you not get partial help for childcare via universal credit?

So in my current job I do four days and pay nursery for three days. If I got the job on my pay, they are saying it's full time hours only, and I can't afford the fourth day at nursery.

If I took the lower paid job, I would have to work five days to earn as much as possible to make up for the salary drop, but I still couldn't afford four days of nursery on that new salary.

I earn good money, but our mortgage is sizeable and that + childcare costs causes issues. DD won't be eligible for funded hours until September 2023. This was how we decided I would go back four days, the maths worked.

But for one year the lower job has pay protection so you would get paid your current salary??

Gives you time to find another job, get promoted etc?

How much would redundancy be? Don't forget the value of your pension contributions, DC being used to nursery etc

Unless you earn less per day than nursery costs per day, surely a fifth day in the higher paying job would leave you better off?
