What does a court usher do?

I've been wanting a job in/near the legal field since I graduated many years ago. Unfortunately I didn't go straight into anything and I'm paying for it now.

I have a scheduled phone call with a recruitment agent regarding a court usher role where I live. I'm so torn because I'd love the job but I'm freaked out because would I have to sit in in horrible child abuse cases with images and all that stuff? I couldn't cope. Do ushers have to be in court seeing and hearing this sickening stuff? It's the kids/animals stuff I cant hack.

You would be expected to perform some tasks whilst in the courtroom yes. As to what sort of cases you might be working around that is a bit of an unknown but if there were to be a distressing case then yes, you would still need to carry out any duties that involve you being in the room. Probably work asking which division the court usher role is for - civil, criminal, family for example, family/criminal cases likely to be more distressing but they doesn’t mean they will all be.
