Applying for a job using email

This may sound stupid. I’ve not applied for a new job in 15 years but want to so do now. It’s a job in our local town. Small town where everyone knows everyone. I am wary about applying as they are asking for applications by email. The email is their known general email address. Obviously, I don’t know who opens the emails at their end but I do have acquaintances who work in the office already. I am worried that details of me applying will then become known. There is an element of being careful as gossip spreads in our town like wild fire. Gossip can be on Facebook before you’ve made it home type thing.

I was going to set up a new email so my application would come from something like our family name or my initials @gmail.com or similar or am I being ridiculous?

I don’t want to go against their recruitment advert by handing in an application as that, to me, means I can’t follow instructions.

Perhaps this is a non issue but if anyone has any tips, I’d be happy to hear them. This place can’t be the only one to use an email like this for applications.

A generic email address with initials sounds fine keep it simple. The rest there’s probably an element of overthinking but having lived in a small town I do get it. If you can find out the name of the person recruiting I’d address it to them, but shared mailboxes are just that and multiple people maybe accessing them. Good luck hope you get the job.

I don't think there is anything wrong with having a sensible email adress for job apps. An employer once said to me that people don't think about the affect the email has on the application. Someone I knew of had 'Too much sugar baby' in it. So long as it's sensible, nothing wrong with it. Are you expected to attach a CV to it?

I think you are going to have to accept that you applying will be known by some people. Use whatever email address you like, but I think your covering email will still need to have your name on so pointless changing the email unless your current one is not professional enough. Also, I would get on it quick because vacancies don't always hang around to the closing date. Good luck.

I wasn't suggesting your email address was wildly unsuitable btw....:)

Thank you. Yes, I’ll not be going with something like fluffysocks@hotmail. Will keep it more professional.

I do have the practice managers direct email. Again, I am reluctant to use that for the reason given about handing in an application by hand. If I do it that way, it will indicate I don’t trust the staff receiving the general emails.

If you get the job they'll know anyway. Just apply by email as requested. Handing in an application is a sign you are a dinosaur 🦖

Unless you are going to use a false name on the actual application or on your CV surely they are going to know it's you anyway? I hope from your mention of a practice manager this is not a doctor or health centre? If they have asked for applications by email and you hand it in it would indeed indicate that you couldn't/wouldn't follow simple instructions and it's just a hassle if they then have to scan your application to get it into an electronic format.

I do think you are overthinking everyone else level of interest in you applying for a job though?

It won't matter if you change your email address as you'll still need to put your name on the email and it will be on your CV?
