What to do after nursing?

I have been an ICU nurse for 15 years but my mental health has been shattered by Covid. I don't think I can do it much longer and it's time to start looking for new jobs. What do ex nurses do? Nursing related or completely different, but I feel like I have very few skills other than those directly involved in my current job. Help!

One of my friends is loving lecturing- nursing degree course

I'm in a similar position. I have applied for covid vaccinations with Medacs, (pretty good pay)
a nurse lecturer position, and I have a search on Indeed for pharmaceutical / medical writer jobs.

Oh I also accidentally had an interview for a care home job.

I went into health visiting. I love it. I do miss ITU but it was relentless.

Teach BLS/ILS/Mandatory training/1st aid courses

Work for the RCN/unison

1st aid at festivals/events/stadiums

Do you have any other interested/hobbies? A friend did a law degree, after nursing. He was in demand, as had the medical knowledge to work in medical claims and negligence.

Massage therapy, osteopath, physio, occupational therapy?

Occupational health?

I know a few nurses who have switched to community based positions such as practice nurse or vaccination nurse (non Covid, just babies and children). Both of these kinds of job are Mon - Fri 9-5 jobs, which don't involve working any bank hols/ xmas etc, and can be found with full or part time hours. MUCH less stress too, just organised clinics with a proper start/end time and breaks built in, but the same hourly wage.

I'm an ex senior nurse. Got sick of it. I'm now a podiatrist in the NHS 9 to 5 weekends off. I love it. We,re desperate for staff. You can also earn loads doing private practice.
I've also been a specialist nurse advisor for insurance companies
They don't advertise, you have to send a CV round.

Aesthetics seems to be what all my nursey friends are doing! Big business if you get the model right.

I’m interested in this too.
I used to work in trauma wards but just burnt out. I then worked in a hospice which was a much better pace but still working shifts.
I now only work on the bank and can pick and choose when I work and I am much happier but still have such low confidence in choosing a nee career path as all I’ve ever done since I was 18 is nursing.

Change track? NICU? Pall care CNS? Community?

Noterook · 10/07/2021 10:18

I guess it depends what you want to do- retain pin and carry on in nursing but in community, schools, GP practice, private, clinical advisor for 111 or 999? Shift work or standard hours?

If you want to leave nursing still plenty of transferable skills, and many trusts now do a return to nursing scheme if you take x years out and decide you want to return.

Occupational health is another option.

Hi, how is working for insurance companies.. I’ve thought about it but was not sure if working for an insurance company would be as stressful as working g for the NHS.
