Job at school- but have a holiday booked in term time

I’ve applied for a job in a school office, the hours are perfect for me as I’m a lone parent and the schools in walking distance from my house.
My only worry re getting the job is that next year I have a holiday booked that goes into the first week of the new school year in September - it’s a rearranged trip from last year.
The interview is next week, should I tell them about the holiday at the interview or wait to see if I’m offered the job?

I would wait to see if you are offered the job..they should honour it..good luck!

We usually ask during the interview stage if you've got any holidays booked.

I don't work in the education sector, but surely one week, already booked, would be fine.

Wait until you’re offered the job. However, office staff missing the first week of school is not going to go down well - that’s one of the weeks they’re most needed!

Your only hope at having it off are letting them know at interview, but agree with others that unlikely to go down well wanting what is probably one of the busiest weeks off.

This happened to me. I offered to have the time off unpaid. Had a very good head who let me have the time off and also paid me. I let him know during the interview though.

Precisely my concern @ChessieFL
I totally understand how bad it is which is why I’m wondering whether to tell them at the interview in case it’s a deal breaker for them, which I would understand.
I’ve looked into changing the dates of the trip but it’s considerably more expensive and I’d lose a lot of money if I cancelled completely.
I never thought having a holiday booked would be such an inconvenience!!

Would you sacrifice getting this job for the holiday?

Hope it doesn't come to that but I'd have thought the first week of term at a school is absolutely essential to be there for in most cases.

I wouldn't mention it unless asked in the interview, until the job has been offered.

Iggi999 · 01/07/2021 14:55

Would you be able or willing to rearrange the holiday?
I would not tell them unless offered the job.

QuestionableDanceMoves · 01/07/2021 14:58

@BrilliantBetty I would have to- I can’t afford to lose the amount of money I’ve already paid out for the holiday. It was booked in 2019 using some inheritance and is a once in a lifetime type trip.

@Iggi999 I’ve looked into changing or cancelling and I can’t afford to do either unfortunately

I think it will probably be fine - if you are the candidate they want. But they will wonder why you don't rearrange so be prepared for the question! If this really is an ideal job for you that won't come around again you'd have to think what you would do if they don't allow you any time off.

Ex-teacher here. I've known even teachers who have joined the school have their pre-booked holidays honoured. If you are the one they want for the job, they will be happy to do that.
