Psychometric tests for practise

Hi, after some recommendations please

Going through a restructuring process at work and will be interviewed etc for a new role. Pressure is on as failure to perform = redundancy

It's senior (band 8D & 9) NHS operational management . Selection process includes assessment centre and psychometric testing

Can any of you clever people please recommend some practice tests ? Happy to pay a bit bit so

Hi OP, I’m sorry you’re experiencing so much pressure that you are wanting to practice psychometrics. Aren’t the measures likely to be about your personality, strengths, weaknesses etc? So you don’t need to practice? Just be yourself and hopefully your strengths will shine through? A lot of measures have inbuilt validity checks so I don’t suggest you try and rig your answers - they’ll know.

If you are being asked to do an IQ type test that’s weird and a bit unethical.

It’s also unethical to practice those types of tests by paying for them. Psychometrics are expensive to buy and often cost a fair amount to administer per licence. Their use is also regulated and bound by professional obligations. I don’t think you’ll find anyone willing to share their tools with a stranger for practice reasons!

It is not unethical to use cognitive ability tests as they're the most valid form of selection so if they want the best person for the job they'll be using them.

It's also not unethical to practice them, it's sensible. Having said that the whole point of the tests is you can't improve your scores with practice...officially. of course though you can become more familiar with the types of questions you'll be asked and probably improve accuracy as a result.

I would suggest buying a book for psychometrics practice for senior roles. It's the easiest way of doing it I find.

Some psychometric publishers will also have practices on their websites so try websites for

SHL
Saville consulting
Thomas International
Hogrefe

As a start.

In order to 'practice' psychometric tests you need to know what qualities they are looking for and which qualities they think are undesirable for the roles and then be able to make the correct choices to influence the outcome to show those results.

Unless you have their 'good' and 'bad' list you really can't practice.

Thanks for the responses! So I think there will be numerical and verbal reasoning assessments and probably something like MBTI

It's the reasoning ones I feel I need to get the hang of so I don't freak out when confronted by them on the day! Will look into the website ones thanks Smile
