Career advice? Should I quit my job before finding a new one?

I need help and advice from someone as I'm at a cross roads 🙈

So basically, I had the best job ever, as a Floor supervisor in Retail. I loved all my work colleagues and the salary was really good, the only problem was I had to travel 2 hours per day to get to work.

So I decided to leave and take a job that was only 10 minutes from my house. I've been at this company for 2 months now and I'm really unhappy. It's less pay, they make you work over time unpaid. I don't get discount until after 6 months of employment. The management really look down on you.

I applied for a new job somewhere else as an Assistant manager and they want to interview me but the only problem is, they want to interview me on either Friday or next week and unfortunately on Friday I'm working all day and next week I'm going on holiday so I told them I will see them Friday because I didn't want them to think I wasn't interested 😔
So now i'm thinking to quit my current job to go to the interview, but do you think its a good idea?
Especially if money is tight at the moment.

I would really would appreciate your thoughts? As I really need help

No I wouldn’t generally quit a job in order to attend an interview.

Could you not just call in sick to attend the interview?

ItsSnowJokes · 28/06/2021 19:50

Do not resign without a job. The job market is brutal at the moment, loads of applications for 1 job. Just call in sick on Friday for your interview.

I was forced to quit a new job in march and its been horrendous trying to find work. Despite being qualified with 20 years experience I have only just managed to get a 4 month fixed term contract at a more junior level.

You may get lucky but if you need the income it's not worth the risk. Pull a sickie instead.

Metabigot · 28/06/2021 19:54

If you're desperate to attend the interview could you delay your holiday by a day and go the following week?

SMSGN · 29/06/2021 06:05

The worst thing is...My current job is in a shopping mall and the new job I have applied for is directly opposite the new one so I'm worried if I pull a sicky, someone will see me from work so I'm in a big pickle.

@JorisBohnson2 I did consider that, but the hiring manager is only available to interview on certain days. My holiday is from Saturday and she was unable to see me until Wednesday, so it's hard to delay it for that long.

Is it possible for you to have your interview in your lunch time? To explain to a colleague what's going on and arrange your break and lunch together?

Could you explain to the place of your interview and try to arrange the time at the start or end of your shift?

It sounds pretty likely that you could be seen by someone from your current workplace.

It's a tough one. I wish you much luck!
