First job interview... Ever, help! 😖

I'm 30, mum to 6 (blended family) and I've been in the same line of work but different establishments, mostly waitressing/catering and never had to interview for the roles. I have my first interview on Friday for the perfect job and hours as catering assistant throughout the whole school day at local high school and I'm absolutely BRICKING it because it's just ideal for me and my family life!! No clue what to wear, what to say and not to say. My family and friends are saying to just be myself which is so so lovely but not very helpful. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!!!

Relax. Take a deep breath.

Don’t be afraid to say at the beginning that your nervous.

Think about some of the likely questions they will ask based on the job - what experience and skills you have that would make you good in the job would be a good question to prep for.

Don’t shy away from talking about excellent time management and flexibility needed to manage 6 kids and cope with the unexpected with a smile on your face while keeping everyone calm and happy.

There will almost certainly be a question about how you work as a team / work with other people so think of examples of doing this that focus on being friendly easy going, cheerful, being quick to help out and work around others as needed to get the job done.

At the end they might ask if you have any questions so think of a couple so it doesn’t throw you on the day - maybe why the vacancy has come up, or what are the rest of the team like or is there anything else that you need from me, have answered everything you needed.

It goes with out saying be super early even if it means walking round outside for a bit, remember to turn off your phone. Look neat and organised and friendly and warm with the interviewers.

Might be worth a snoop on Facebook to se dog you know anyone who works there to ask them about the role / team.

Good luck 🤞🏻

Oh in terms of what to wear be smart and neat. Hair tied back if it’s given to being fly away and crazy like mine.

Do you have any outfits in mind?

Look up answers relating to equality and diversity. Its bound to come up. Look up the councils policy and see what it is. Mine has added their own to the protected ones.

Smart, neat and tidy is key for dress - that doesn’t mean business attire, just something that shows you have made an effort.

Look up something about safeguarding - in an educational setting I would expect that to come up.

Absolutely just be yourself - if you’re really nervous I like it when candidates acknowledge that, we’ve all been there, interviews are strange and unnatural things!

And definitely just be yourself. Think about what you can offer to the role - commitment, previous experience, enthusiasm, experience dealing with children (even if they are your own!) attention to detail, organising planning etc etc.

Good luck!
