HR question re sick pay

HR question re sick pay

I’ve been at my workplace for 2 years on 1st August.

Contract states sick pay of 1 month full pay for first 2 years rising to 3 months full pay after 2 years (so after 1st Aug)

Due to a quite major health issue I’ve had 18 days sick so far this year on full pay.
However now need surgery so from September I will need 6-8 weeks off work.

My question is how many days of my 6 -8 week op recovery will I get on full pay before it goes to SSP?? (bearing in mind the 18
days I’ve had off already this year)

I can not quite work it out due to sick pay allowance changing on my 2 year ‘anniversary’ on 1st Aug. Thanks

You’d have to check with your HR team, but sickness is often recorded on a “rolling year” basis, so any paid sickness absence in the last 12 months will be counted against your 3 months pay. So if you’ve already had 3 weeks off on full pay, then you would only have 9 weeks left.

The HR team were not too helpful , they just reiterated what I already knew about the ‘allowance’ going up when I got to 2 years service.

Well if you work on my assumption above then that would be “worst case” before you drop to SSP. Remember that the “three months” is usually calendar months, but sickness is paid on working days. So on a 5day/week basis, 18 days is 3 and 1/2 weeks worth of sick pay.

If for some reason the sick leave resets at your service anniversary you might get the full 12 weeks - Brucie bonus!

@ATowelAndAPotato
Thank you for your help. I’m anxious enough with the health and operation worries without fretting over sick pay!
