Did you put it in writing or just tell them verbally?

I told mine verbally. Congratulations!

Verbally. My advice is consider your timings, you don't have to say anything until about 28wks I think, but may want to tell employer as soon as you know if you have any risks at work eg working with chemicals.

Most people tell work after 12 or 20 week scan in my experience.

Verbally at first. Then when dates were confirmed etc and MATB1 completed in writing with date i intended to start maternity leave (although this did change) and my plans to take the full 12 month allowance.

To add I did have to say a little early list than I would have like due to ivf

You will probably have to tell them no later than 25 weeks for your maternity leave, and that will be in writing.

Any time before that is your choice, but their responsibilities to you as an expectant mother and your protection only kick in once they know. So you may find it beneficial to tell your immediate manager a lot sooner but ask for it to be kept confidential. This will give you protection such as a requirement for a risk assessment to be carried out, time off for antenatal appointments. And that any pregnancy related sickness doesn't count on your sickness record (this can mean it is worth telling them even before 12 week scan if you have a difficult first trimester)

Ps - before 25 weeks, I told my manager verbally first (as in writing seemed weirdly formal) but I did then follow up with an email so that if ever I needed it that I had something in writing to evidence that my employer could not claim not to know I was pregnant. Belt and braces. I had no reason to think they would do that, but equally didn't want to take any chances. I work in HR. It's made me see the value of having a paper trail when it comes to important things!
