Injured at work. What now

I've been in an actively unsafe situation for several months. (Health + social care) Boss has humoured staff but not actually put risk assessments or any measures to protect staff in place. I now possibly require surgery as a consequence of working there. Feeling very frustrated and anxious. Really worried about my long term employment prospects too. Anyone have any advice please?

What sort of injury, was it an accident or something caused by unsafe working. I would speak to your union rep if you have one or ACAS. Is there an hr or occupational health department. Have you seen a doctor, can they confirm its a work related injury.
I would try and write down what training you have had, what discussions have staff had about unsafe working, what has been reported, the managers response, what risk assessments should have been done. Anything you can think of that will help you. Are you off sick now. If you are still able to work you can get their health and safety policy, the managers job respinsibilites, reporting concerns policy.

Thankyou both of you. Pretty overwhelmed right now so light on the matter.

Injury is entirely down to unsafe working.
@dogsausages - really appreciate the time put into your response. Have drafted acas and unison contact but my head's a mess. Thankyou for the 'hand to help me up'

  1. Ask for the incident(s) to be put in the accident book. Make sure you do this in writing.
  2. Look at the HSE to see if you are covered by RIDDOR www.hse.gov.uk/riddor/index.htm and who you can report your injuries to.
  3. Contact TU, ACAS and look to see if you have legal cover on your house insurance.
  4. Make sure any medical documents include how you were injured.

NOTE: No matter how good your employer is you need to sue them for injury and compensation. It’s a quirk of the law/insurance that not everyone understands.

You can also ask about getting temporary injury payments if you are off sick without sick pay. If you are in Unison they should support you in any meetings you have. Dont sign anything, attend meetings, discuss this with your colleagues or manager without unison or ACAS support. Good luck, it's not easy, I had an injury at work, it took nearly 3 years for them to settle and it was entirely their fault.
