So I am 34 this year and have a degree in public health spent my whole working life in health care and I am just exhausted and fed up. I hate working in this field now have done for a good 2 years. I want a different career. So many choices I just don't know what to pick?!

I’m 34 an work an ‘office’ job in admin! Lovely people, work itself its fine, really good company. Been there a while too, but it isn’t challenging me so i’m taking truck driving lessons something i always wanted to do but never thought about seriously. Then with the past year being so chaotic and so much uncertainty everywhere i thought why wait i’m lucky ( and mega determined) though to be able to go after what you want. LifeGoal
is2drive the 40ton ones!

I’m a physio specialising in persistent pain. To me it’s the best job in the world, I get to see full on transformations and it’s such a privilege to be able to help someone manage their pain (and life really!).

SnarkyBag · 07/06/2021 20:39

Paediatric OT. Love it

MissCruellaDeVil · 07/06/2021 20:50

Finance Director, I like it but too much travelling, hard with DC and it often involves me living between two places. I have signed up to start Teacher Training! 🏫

randomkey123 · 07/06/2021 20:53

I work with DH in his business - I started off doing the admin but now am jack of all trades and do everything from insurance, book keeping, supplier contracts, HR, and also working in the retail showroom with clients. It's a really rewarding job but working with your DH and being together 24/7 isn't the easiest thing.... and ultimately it's his business in his name, so there are times that he pulls rank and it can be a bit demoralising.

I've had a fair few jobs before - started off in the civil service, then trained as a playleader when our DC were small, worked as a florists assistant, trained as a healthcare assistant (with the intention of then training as a nurse but was too put off).

Senior for an LA - in education. Was a HT.

Hate my job, hate the mess this government is making to the education of our children and to the system.

Inarightpickleandpreserve · 07/06/2021 21:14

I’m a PA and it’s absolutely brilliant I love it

TippledPink · 07/06/2021 21:17

I'm a social worker in Adults. I work as an agency worker so change jobs regularly. I like the pay but fed up with the work. Struggle to take holiday as I don't get paid! And unlikely to earn anymore than I currently am.

winched · 07/06/2021 21:19

I was a Quality Manager and really loved it... until someone retired and I got moved onto a 30+ year old product family that had 0 budget or motivation to fix any quality issues Envy that was boring, just endless days of twenty people trying to look busy.

So I quit and now I write books for a living.

Both have their positives and negatives.

My old job, I loved working as a team, the pressure of everything fucking up and all of us pulling together to turn it around. That feeling is addictive! I also met so many interesting people and got to work with amazing technology.

I love what I do now, too. Making stuff up in my head and getting paid for it. Working whenever and wherever I want. It's very satisfying... but also very lonely. I think I'm going to get a co-working space as soon as the risk of restrictions is gone to try to get around the solitary aspect. Zooms and group chats just aren't the same as real life (for me).

Love this thread, wish it came with salary info/years experience for context!

I work in property/finance, £60kpa, I used to absolutely love it but since moving jobs pre-COVID I've completely fell out of love with it. Full time wfh for a huge company and just completely lost my motivation. About to start a new job in same field, smaller company and hoping it re-ignites some passion.

Whatelsecouldibecalled · 07/06/2021 21:20

@mygee I completely agree you are under valued. The staff at my boys nursery are amazing. I wish they were paid better.

I’m a secondary school teacher. I don’t love it. It’s stressful. But I feel well paid and it has the obvious holiday perks

winched · 07/06/2021 21:23

Same! I'm nosy like that Grin

Quality Manager - I started as an apprentice on £12k a year, 10 years later I was on £34k (not too bad for Scotland). I think if I'd stuck at it I would have seen £40k by age 30.

FlappityFlippers1 · 07/06/2021 21:23

I am a child car seat product expert for a leading child car seat manufacturer. I absolutely love it.

I was on the road training retail staff, but left after DS1 due to immediate family health problems, and went back to the company last year covering the web chat out of hours. So I can be home with DC (since had another DS) by day, and get to work in the field I absolutely love by night!

I'm currently doing a degree in product design, and hope to join the design team in the future as I absolutely love the technical side of it (although helping people keep their babies safe in the car is very satisfying!)

Hugely outing, so if anyone recognises me - Hi!

VettiyaIruken · 07/06/2021 21:25

I'm a miniaturist specialising in micro scale. (1:144th)

It is really a lot of fun.

alwayswrighty · 07/06/2021 21:27

Financial Advisor. I specialise in insuring people for death and illness (really cheery Grin) but I actually really enjoy it.

carlywurly · 07/06/2021 21:30

I look after people and operations, in a business, not medical sense! I work for an amazing organisation with a fab exec director team and colleagues and love what I do.

denverRegina · 07/06/2021 21:35

@winched what kind of books do you write?

thewinehasgonetomyhead · 07/06/2021 21:38

@bumhug

I retrained as a beauty therapist at the ripe old age of 32yrs. I used to be in recruitment.

11 years later and I specialise in intimate waxing.

The money is awesome and the job is the best thing ever!

@bumhug

Wow! Is this something you always wanted to do or was it a sudden change?

How did you retrain?

SinkGirl · 07/06/2021 21:39

@abbw

I work in communications and media for a formula 1 team. Absolutely love it. I haven't traveled with the team this season yet due to an injury, but when I was traveling it was the best!
That must be amazing. I used to work for a big international festival in Cannes pre-kids and while it was such hard work, the weeks there were just amazing. I’m sure my DH would have much preferred me to work in F1 though, he’s obsessed.
delilabell · 07/06/2021 21:42

TA in an additional needs school. I absolutely adore it. Pay isn't hideous

SinkGirl · 07/06/2021 21:43

I work very part time as basically a service user representative in the NHS - I really enjoy it.

Have also recently restarted my own craft design business - hard going trying to get back on my feet especially as my twins need a lot of care. I love working for myself but need to kick things up a notch and struggling at the moment.

SinkGirl · 07/06/2021 21:44

Thank you for all your hard work - the staff at my twins school are wonderful and make such a difference to our lives. Wish you were all paid more though!
winched · 07/06/2021 21:44

@denverRegina whatever sells Grin I mostly write romance books, although I've written a thriller too it was basically for me and not expected to pay the bills. To pay the bills I write everything from aliens to high schoolers to mad max style crazies (all romance Smile).

BertieBotts · 07/06/2021 21:45

Thank you Starry so helpful.

Flappity another job I'd absolutely love to do! I think I might recognise you if you are who I think you are, but we have never met - only spoken online.

FlappityFlippers1 · 07/06/2021 21:48

You’re probably right - I don’t think there are many people who do what I do, with my circumstances right now!

Have recognised you on car seat threads 😊 excellent advice as always, you’re usually there first so I haven’t posted on there much haha!
