Anyone around who can help with a pay query?

I've been underpaid for the last month of the job I've just left. The MD has now agreed I was underpaid, but the amount they're saying they owe me is still around £100 (gross) less than I'd expected.

My working week was Monday to Thursday, full days. My last day employed by them was Thursday the 20th of May and I had 5 days unused holiday. I worked out that those 5 days would be the equivalent of me working Mon 24th -Thurs 27th, plus Monday the 31st, i.e. a full month based on my 4-day working pattern.

I was therefore expecting the gross pay on my May payslip to be exactly the same as it was on my April payslip. Have I got something wrong there? If anyone can advise I'd be eternally grateful!

Just to add, I'm in email conversation with the HR person about it, but they were the one who was supposed to tell the accountant what days I was owed, so I suspect it might be their cock-up.

Do you normally get paid for the bank holiday?

I suspect that they will have calculated your part month up to 20th May, then calculated 5 days for your holiday. The 5 days will have been calculated by dividing your annual pay - usually dividing by 260 (working days). As you stopped working there on 20th they don’t have to just pay you the usual full month even though the working days would be the same.

Yes bank holidays were part of my paid annual leave (pro rata) so yes I would have been paid for it as I hadn't used up my allowance.

Why would they pay you the 31st may when you terminated on the 20th?

You'll have new paid the 1st - 20th pay plus 5 days annual leave. Salary/12/30x25 is your gross figure roughly.

@ChessieFL thanks for the explanation, though I'm not sure I understand it! Grin

Let’s say your annual salary is £24k, £2k per month. For the bit up to 20th May you get £1290 (£2k / 31 x 20). Then for the 5 days holiday you get £461 (£24k / 260 x 5). Total £1751.

@ChessieFL you're a star, thank you
