I'm currently working for the NHS and have just been offered a new job (externally) today.
The new employer wants to get the ball rolling with contacting my referee but I asked them to wait till I've had chance to speak to her tomorrow (as a matter of courtesy and respect).
They said no problem. So, I plan to mention the new offer to my manager tomorrow to I've her the heads up.
However, I'm not in position to actually and officially hand in my notice tomorrow.
Will do that when I get a contract.
Is it acceptable in the NHS to tell manager about having accepted the offer but hand in notice later on?
I mean, if the new job offer falls through or anything before I've officially handed in my notice. If that makes sense?
I only want to tell her verbally about it tomorrow as they want to contact her for the reference but I know it will take a bit of time for them to write up my contract and do all the background checks etc.
I've had an email from the interviewer confirming that they would like me to have the job.

I work in the NHS. My manager told me not to hand my notice in until I had everything ready to start my new job at a different Trust (and it took ages for the DBS to come through so glad I didn't hand my notice in as soon as I had been offered the job).

Good luck with your new job!

Yes totally standard, this is the way everyone (or everyone sensible anyway) does it...

Don't hand your notice in until you have a contract. Ask HR to just ask for the reference...they don't have to say they have offered you the job as for some roles they request references prior. Not sure why as so many employers now refuse to give references except to say that you work there/and reason for leaving if an ex employer. Often won't say any more for fear of being sued or getting involved in lengthy arguments.

Yea that happened to me, I work in the NHS and told my manager I had another job but didn’t hand in my notice until all my checks were done which took months! I think it’s quite standard to do this.
