If you might be doing hybrid working going forward...

What equipment will you have issued to you by work?

Thinking of laptop &/or desktop,
screen(s)
cables
chair
docking station
webcam
headphones
printer (& cartridges etc)
laptop bag or sleeve
mouse, keyboard
ethernet cables
?

any of above?

Will you be issued just ONE of any of above... or will you have multiples, one for home & same again 'in the office' -- might well be hotdesked in some way? How will your space in office be allocated?

Will you have a locker or another space to keep any personal things in the office full time?

Will the equipment all be good enough quality?

I have one of each:

  • a laptop (it’s a high end tablet hybrid w all bells and whistles)
  • peripherals inc cables, webcam (laptop),
headphones, laptop bag, mouse, ethernet cable, extra usb attachment

No additional keyboard as I can put my ID card straight into the laptop to log in.

Obviously I have applied for the wfh tax relief.

Some colleagues, who wear glasses, can buy a monitor which will be expensed by work. Everyone can request a desk and chair to be expensed by work. Off the top of my head they’ll pay the first £100 for a desk.

We have to carry everything back and forth to work - nowhere to store it at work. We have hotdesking in the office but everyone tends to sit in the same seat.

Equipment quality is good. No word on printing etc but we don’t really use paper at work - it’s all digital.

AnneLovesGilbert · 30/05/2021 21:10

Are you a journalist or an office supplies marketing exec?

WeAllHaveWings · 30/05/2021 21:29

We will be allowed to WFH more but it is optional. So any home equipment (desk/chair/broadband/monitor) will be at our own cost.

Laptop/company logo bag we get provided with as we take them home each night, basic headset provided which you can take home or use your own. Very few people use the ugly bag and use their own instead. Printer /ink, again because it is optional, use your own or go into work to print.

The difference in what is reasonably provided depends on whether you are required to WFH or choose to.

lljkk · 30/05/2021 22:58

Neither, honest, @AnneLovesGilbert

all my equipment is unofficial, borrowed rather than issued, and may be recalled ; I have no clue what equipment we will get as hybrid becomes official

I don't want a lousy little laptop expected to use on wifi in office or at home, no dockstation, no external screens, which I fear is all we will get when hybrid becomes official policy; I also don't want to have to lug a big laptop or a load of other equipment back & forth when I sometimes do go into office. It is easier to do alot of the work if I can print sometimes. I'm confused what equipment is typical issue for 'hybrid' working, and what people find actually 'works'

Quite a boring thread tbh

Lighttunnelahead · 30/05/2021 23:00

We supply whatever is justifiably needed but we urge co workers to be mindful of the environment.
They mostly get
High spec laptop and stand
Ipad/portable monitor (third screen)
Large stand monitor for home
keyboard & mouse
Contribution to desk and chair - they get to keep
Jabra headphones
iphone
covers and cases
hdmi multi use adapters
I have not seen anyone claim for cables...not sure why - they are well paid and it might seem a bit penny pinching
No locker - everyone is fully mobile, all equipment is top quality, no one will have multiples of anything.

NameChangeforMoneyThings · 30/05/2021 23:03

I have one screen which I got from work, not expecting that to go back tbh. The other I nabbed off a friend from before home working was officially a thing. Chair was taken from the office, don't know when that will have to go back tbh.

I wouldn't expect to have to take a screen or keyboard back and forth daily but laptop and charger as things you have to take is totally normal - even when I didn't work from home regularly they used to come home every night because the one night you didn't would be the evening the boss called wanting something urgent done/the day my disability played up the next morning so I didn't want to go into work.

Taswama · 30/05/2021 23:09

We have recently been issued with laptop + headset + mouse + bag for home use.
At work they have set up docking stations so you just need to bring in your laptop and headphones. I tend to use my phone earphones as they take up less room.
You can request a docking station and screen for home.
Some people took chairs or screens home in March / April / May 2020. I didn't as I don't have a permanent office space and didn't want it in my living space out of work hours.
Some lockers at work but not many.

Pinetreesfall · 30/05/2021 23:10

@Lighttunnelahead can I come and work with you?
I've got a 5 year old laptop and a barely functioning work mobile. Everything else - headphones, screen, cables, new charger, desk and chair etc etc I have bought myself.
Who would've known our company turned over £11mil + last year?!

This has really tickled me for some reason! Why bother posting that!

I have a small work laptop and extra screen, as well as headset, cables and work phone. I will eventually be doing 2 days in the office, 3 at home (or thereabouts). I guess I'll be continuing to use my home WiFi. There is a process to get office furniture for home eg desk and chair, but I haven't actually got round to even checking out the policy yet as I have very limited space at home anyway and no real space for extra furniture...

CovidCorvid · 30/05/2021 23:14

Work are providing me with nothing! I’ve asked for a laptop and have been added to the list but have been told it’ll be months before I can have one.

I’m having to buy a desk, a chair, a printer, a Mouse, bookcase, filing cabinet,......oh and building an office to put it all in. Will cost me £thousands.

IsabellesMissingSock · 30/05/2021 23:15

Oh - in the office we will all be hot desking. No lockers as far as I know. Probably won't be in the office at all before the end of this year. A few people have been in but I cba until I have to

DamnYouAutoCatRectal · 30/05/2021 23:25

I was sent a laptop and phone immediately, could have had chair, screen, potential contribution towards desk, but I'm still not entirely sure where I'm going to set up longer term. DP and I tend to hot desk round each other at home, so it will depend who is doing which hours at home when some sort of normality returns.

We've got DP's chair at the moment, but he expects to be called back to the office (and to have to bring his chair back with him) before I do.

No printer as we're encouraged to be as paperless as possible.

AgeLikeWine · 30/05/2021 23:26

Work have provided a laptop, 22’ monitor, mouse, keyboard (which I don’t use) and an iPhone.

My work set-up is completed by a desk, chair, radio, tea mug & biscuit tin which are my own. Grin

qualitygirl · 30/05/2021 23:28

laptop -already have....practically every employee at my company gets one
screen(s) -yes
cables -yes as standard
chair -yes
docking station -no need
webcam -built into the laptop
headphones - yes but again this is standard for staff
printer (& cartridges etc) - yes
laptop bag or sleeve -standard
mouse, keyboard- no need with a laptop
ethernet cables- yes if requested
?

any of above?

We still have an office space too. Or a shared space.

Will you have a locker ? Yes but we had these already

Will the equipment all be good enough quality?- excellent quality! It's a global company

😂There are a lot of positives in working for us, we are small with a flat structure, we believe in quality in everything we do - but it's hard work and sometimes very long hours, it's not for 9-5 Mon- Fri types...we pay high salaries - so our teams need to be efficient and have equipment that works - it's that simple.

BackforGood · 30/05/2021 23:43

We have the laptops we've always had.
It is what we used when we went in to the office prior to COVID
Yes, mine has a mouse, and the one that I got new when my old one died does have a camera (prior to that we were issued with webcams about 6 months ago)

Nothing else issued. There was some way you could apply to go and collect a chair if you needed one, about a year ago, but it seemed like a lot of hassle and wouldn't have fitted in my car

It's some years since we printed things - everything gets sent by e-mail these days in my line of work.

"lug a big laptop" ?? How big is your laptop exactly ? I mean, that is the point of laptops - that they are portable.

I'll answer bases on my organisation that has always had wfh employees and a small minority who'd be deemed to be "hybrid". So we've always had:

laptop
Mobile
Tablet
All above have inbuilt high spec cameras
WiFi phone and all required paraphernalia
screen - some opt for multiple
All required cables
chair and desk/furniture, as required, eg bookshelves etc. However, as is commonplace, with regards the furniture policies, it's to a maximum financial level and there's a proviso about bearing some of the costs if an employee leaves the organisation within a certain time frame.
docking station if required
headphones - multiple for all of the various pieces of tech
printer (& cartridges etc)
laptop bag and sleeves, plus covers and laptop bag or wheelbag
mouse, keyboard, ethernet cables

Hope that helps.

Basic rule of thumb, is if you need to use something for work, then it should be provided. Unless, of course it's a "choice".

FizzyPink · 31/05/2021 08:32

When I go into the office I just plug my laptop into a desk already set up with two screens plus a keyboard and mouse.

At home I have my laptop set up on a stand plugged into an additional screen on my dining table. My laptop, screen, chair, keyboard, mouse and laptop bag are all paid for my work. If I wanted a desk, headphones or more notebooks I would just buy them and expense the cost.

It’s funny, last March I thought it such a waste of money that they were spending thousands of pounds buying all this equipment for an office of 100 people to wfh for 6 weeks. How wrong I was Blush

HercwasanEnemyofEducation · 31/05/2021 08:34

Teacher so hoping we'll never WFH again. But we got nothing. Supplied my own laptop and broadband.

I'm afraid that I understand the term lugging a laptop, as I too feel the same and have a back issue,, so struggled with attending City meetings that weren't accessible by car. Hence, we have multiple options as to whether work from laptop, tablet, mobile etc.
Thurlow · 31/05/2021 08:37

We’ve all been offered the same set up at home as we would have at work. So laptop, docking station, headsets, mouse, keyboard and monitor, and chair and even desk if we need it.

How on earth are you working without a laptop assuming your job needs access to emails/work files etc? I don’t have a personal laptop, they can’t assume everyone has Confused
lljkk · 31/05/2021 08:40

I like my work. I don't want to start disliking it because they give us unsuitable equipment.

I sometimes get files that can only be viewed on very first computer I initially view them on, and can be printed once only (only way to share with colleagues, and yet work plan requires shared viewing by other colleagues).

Lugging: we had only huge padded laptop bags in last job I had where a laptop was our primary equipment and only issued-for-home equipment. Commuting that required Walking a mile (nearest free parking) or cycling 17 miles to work was challenging with that huge bag.

Laptop-only jobs we had docking stations & 2 screens at workplace, but a lot of the dock stations were on wifi & V e r y S l o w. At least we had lockers & space for home stuff; if I have to lug that back and forth then that is a challenge -- trainers worn at work daily, maybe is solution.
