I work in the public sector and my pay slip is released a few days before I am actually paid.

This month I noticed my overtime payment due had not been processed, equivalent to more than 10% of my expected wage. I'm on a low grade so not well paid and this 10% is going to severely effect my budget for the month. (I'm currently buying my first house).

Managers who got it wrong don't care. Payroll don't care. Financially I don't know what to do. These are the options as I seem them.

1)pull out of my house purchase that I've already sunk lots of money into because I won't be able to pay needed fees for another month.

  1. take out personal credit which could risk my mortgage and cause the whole house purchase to fall through anyway.

  2. sell my late mother's jewelry, the only thing I have left of her.

I feel my employer has backed me into a financial corner. I'm not in a union and now can't afford one to get help because they've not paid me.

I don't know if I'm asking for advice on how to make extra money fast or how to make my employer fulfill their contractual responsibilities. I'm just so defeated and lost. I've never felt so disrespected and scummy and insignificant as a human with this work as I do now.

Sorry it's a long one.

When this happened at my previous employer the employee would be given a cheque for 60% of the gross overpayment ( to allow for PAYE, NI and pension contributions) as an advance.
The payroll for the next month would be run at the correct time for that month's salary including the missed payment and the cheque amount would be deducted from the net pay paid to the employee.
That way there was not all the hassle of rerunning pay roll and the employee got the missing money on time.

Morning folks. Just thought I'd come update.

Finally got upper management to agree to force through a BACS payment. I should have it next week. I am grateful for the practical and respectful advice and mentions were made of speaking to acas, breach of contract etc. The manager who messed up is clearly not happy I went above his head but has evidently been told he has no recourse to be a dick towards me.

And to those who were quite rude and patronising, I have a complicated and potentially outing financial history so 'shove it on a credit card and worry about it later' is not an attitude I ever have. Also, whilst the equivalent funds may not be much to you, as a single person, on a low income, running the costs of one house whilst buying another, purse strings get tight.

Well done Op, I'm glad it's worked out. Good luck with your new house.

I’m very pleased for you @Mmmcheese89. What a stressful time you’ve had. Let’s hope they learn to not make such mistakes again.

Neolara · 03/06/2021 07:28

Delighted this has been resolved for you op..

Lemonlemon88 · 03/06/2021 07:40

They can put through a special payrun if they want to, it will just cost them which is why they try to make you wait til the next one.

If you were my friend, I would help so maybe ask a friend and see how it goes?

Lemonlemon88 · 03/06/2021 07:42

Oops missed the update, that is great news OP.

l2b2 · 03/06/2021 15:45

Well done OP and good luck with your house move. Too bad the LM who cocked up is unhappy you went above his head; perhaps that will teach him / her to be more vigilant in future.

So pleased for you OP. Congratulations!
